I have such a question; not sure anyone knows but will ask? Will I have any problems at the UK borders if I travel on a European passport/ ID card and my baby on a British passport? Does it matter at all if the baby and mother have different European passports?

I always carry a letter of authority from DH with a copy of his passport and our livret de famille but it's not been a problem yet.

We did it out of fun but had DD's German one with us as well. The border control in France just laughed.

If in doubt and your child doesn't have a passport in your nationality I would take the birth certificate which states you as the mother and a letter from the father.

a copy of the birth certificate is always a good idea anyway.

Done this many times, never been questioned.

I have a different nationality AND a different surname from my daughter and always take a birth certificate along.

Our family of four normally travel on separate passports: mine (German), dh's (American) and the kids use their British ones (as it is sturdier than the German paper ones...). Never been a problem (and we travel a lot!).

I always get questioned in Gatwick, as DS and I don't have the same surname. It's a good idea to carry a copy of the birth certificate, although now that he's older, they just tend to ask "is this your mum?"

I travelled through Amsterdam with DS. Different names/passports... I stupidly hadn't even thought it might be an issue but got questioned by the immigration control people, had me panicking for quite a while until someone senior decided we were ok (I managed to produce a debit card with mine and DHs name on...) definitely recommend travelling with the birth certificate!
