19 month old can count objects - is this unusual ?

DH and I speak to our son in our native language at home. We never speak to him in English as we are sure he will learn it quickly at school. We live in London.

DS is now nearly 19 months old. A few days ago, as I was putting up some coloured magnets on the fridge, I started to count them, 1, 2, 3 (in my native language) and immediately he started to repeat them ! I was amazed as so far he actually says very little that is a full word in any language.

Since then, I have been counting things out for him all the time (trying to teach him up to 5 numbers) and he has been really enthusiastic, especially when I change his nappy or put on his socks I start counting his toes, and sometimes he will take the initiative, point to his toes and do it himself.

He isn't very good at pronouncing 1, and 4, as they are more difficult to pronounce, but still, I am really, really pleased as they are the first properly pronounced words he has ever said !!

I have read somewhere that toddlers only learn to count (by rote) at around 2 years old. Is this true ? Also, they do not associate the words 1, 2, 3, etc. with counting until much later than 2 years old ?

I am just wondering if anyone has experience of this ? Do you have a child who started counting objects out way before their 2nd birthday ?

Hmmm, my DD could count stairs when she was about 1 (I remember hte holiday she did it on) up to about 5.

Having said that she is still incredibly good at maths!

Just gently encourage, I would say

yep
both mine

sorry to burst your bubble

I was never sure if it was really by rote and they just stopped "counting" when they got the praise IYSWIM

Mine could count at that age too - her first three word sentence was "two black cars" at 16 months, so not by rote. She could count 5 objects by 18 months and I didn't think it was all that unusual, to be honest.

Didn't think he was a genius, although he has fairly good genes , just hoping he will be good at maths !

I think all posters on this thread have exceptionally bright kids tbh! Certainly staff and parents at ds's nursery were astonished when they overheard him counting up to ten at the same age. Seriously, other parents were stopping me to tell me about it. And he wasn't really counting objects, more repeating by rote.
So you are fully entitled to feel chuffed - and so is everyone else on this thread!

edam - thanks for that. I am hoping he will be good at maths as I am rubbish (I was always better with languages, literature, history, etc), but DH and his entire family are engineers, so they keep going on about maths !

well ds has only just got the hang of counting at 2.4. he is exceptionally lovely though.

(dp apparently said nothing til he was 3 and was generally deeply unpromising. Managed a first in maths from oxford and a phd though-he struggled through...I on the other hand was reading at 2 1/2...and have done f-all with my life since )

Fily - lol - apparently Einstein only began to speak around 3 or 4 - so yes I agree with what you say.

Any way, I wouldn't say you have done nothing - your exceptionally lovely 2.4 is a great achievement !!
