Too much sleep?

First of all to those people whos babies don't sleep, I am not showing off or anything else I just wanted to know if there is an underlying issue here. Smile

My 10 month old dd sleeps through from 6.30pm until 7am. She used to have about 4 x 45 mins sleeps during the day. She now has 2x 1.5 hour sleeps and sometimes more. When she gets up in the morning, within an hour or so she looks exhausted, I don't put her straight down to sleep but I try and change her environment etc. She is commando crawling so moving around a fair bit but not massively. I would have thought by 10 months she would have dropped some of her daytime naps and be awake for longer. Basically she still won't stay awake longer that 2-3 hours at a time. Is this normal or should I be speaking to my GP.

I know I am lucky, but I don't want to sit here smug if there's an issue.

Also, it causes issues when going out because I have to time her naps as otherwise she will be really grumpy and tired when we go out. Shopping trips are often cut short as she is tired and grumpy.

For info, she eats well and is a good weight (91st centile).

TIA

DS was like this at this age. He also slept for 3 hour naps in the afternoons when he was 2.
I read a book called Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child written by a sleep specialist and apparently it is quite normal. The book is quite interesting on the sleep patterns front but a bit controversial regarding how you can get your baby into such a routine. It sounds like yours has figured it out by herself, so make the most of it!

My DS was the same at that age. Also a chunky baby that ate like a horse. Slept from 7pm-ish until 6am every day and had 2 long naps during the day as well. Trying to remember what age the morning naps stopped and think it was around 12mo. Certainly kept his afternoon nap until he started full-time school age 4.5 and even now, age 11, he's more of a lark than a night-owl.

I found ways to work around Rip Van Baby. Mostly meant an early start to things like shopping, putting him in the buggy and then, when he wanted a nap, he could drop off and I could keep going. We'd try to get home for the afternoons so that he could have a proper sleep in a bed although I remember going out for lunch with the GPs on afternoon and DS being fast asleep in his buggy next to the table for hours!!! Good luck

Thanks, it's good to know that others are the same.
I'm starting to panic as her sleeps are getting longer and also she starts nursery for 2 afternoons a week in 2 weeks and I know that she won't sleep there.

She is too particular about where she sleeps etc. she won't sleep in her buggy now, she still will in the car. She will only sleep in her cot in the dark with her nursery rhymes cd on Blush. I'm worried that each afternoon at nursery she will just have a major meltdown after a few hours. Maybe that will force her to be less selective with her sleep habits - we'll see. Wink

Ds used to sleep 13 hours a night at least and have a 3 hour nap after lunch. My goodness it was bliss!

I have a sleeper. She sleeps for up to 14 hours a night and 2 hours in the day. She doesn't sleep so well at nursery but only goes 2 days per week so I don't worry too much, as she goes thurs and fri it often means we get a lay in on a sat!Smile . Now she is older she does sleep well in her pushchair too but that is a recent thing (she is 15 months). I do find that if she only cat naps in the buggy for more than a day or 2 in a row then it makes her more likely to wake at night.

My DD2 is 10 months old and sleeps 12-13 hours at night plus has 2 long naps during the day. I think she must only be awake for around 8 hours in a 24 hour period!

DD1 was exactly the same, I remember finding it a little strange as all the other babies I knew didn't sleep anywhere near as much. I can't remember when she grew out of it but she's now 6 and absolutely fine so I'm not concerned about DD2, I'm just trying to enjoy it while it lasts :)

My DS is 8 1/2 months & pretty much in the routine as your DC. My older 2 boys were also the same & all 3 got themselves into the routine so I just feel very lucky Smile. Mention it to your HV if you are concerned but I personally don't think you've anything to be worried about based on your post.

I wanted to post about this, but didn't want to seem smug!

My 13month old can sleep for Britain!! Admittedly, there was a change to routine today as she had her jabs this afternoon. Put her down for a nap just after tea, so about 5pm, as she'd only had 40mins sleep at nursery and was getting cranky. She's still asleep now, snoring away, which would be fine, except she's not dressed for bed or wearing a night time nappy! Grin

well just like all the others on this post , my 2 yr 5 month old sleeps for britain too !
I feel blessed that even at this age she still sleeps 13hrs at night every night without fail and most days has a 2 hr sleep during the day.
As a single parent im soooo proud of her as ive read some terrible stories on here about mums who have trouble with los not sleeping and i truely feel for them.
