changing nappies????

Hi again, just wondering how people go about nappy changing. Do you just change as needed or do you just routinely change them every hour? we only really change them as and when dirty/wet but now seem to be getting nappy rash so wondering if we're not changing often enough? we have been using yellow cream petanium which does clear it up, but does come back again. Thanks all xx

I tend to change mine when needed, I'm not sure about other nappies but with pampers they expand when wet, so I tend to give it a feel every now and then, if it has expanded I change her. With poo I can smell it from many feet away I change her immediately.

Apparently its the poo that is worse on the skin than wee, so its important to change them very soon after a poo. Metanium cream is amazing.

Are you using wipes? or cotton wool and water? Cotton wool and water is so so much kinder on the skin.

Perhaps try some nappy free time too.

We change before a feed (every 3hours ish) and in between times if needed. Possibly try a different nappy brand see if that helps?

air time really does the trick - I try during a nappy change to let DD kick about without nappy.

I find in winter though nappy rash is more likely - because baby is bundled up and probably gets a bit too warm etc.

As needed. Cloth nappies both babies, eco disposables at night, never any nappy rash.

Before each feed, and anytime there's a poo, which is usually 10 mins after clean nappy goes on:). We use Neal's Yard barrier cream -when I remember- and have never had nappy rash.

We've used pampers from the off, first the new baby ones, then active dry, and just started using baby dry at night. I change before a feed, so every 4-5 hours, up to 8 (!) at night, and change if nappy is obviously wet/soiled or DS tells me he's got a wet bum (specific cry!). DS is 4mo now, and has never had even the slightest bit of nappy rash. I do try to let him have some nappy off time a couple of times a day, but this is a fairly recent development, as for the first 10 weeks or so he would scream if you took his clothes off, let alone his nappy!

How old is your baby?

DS pooed a lot when he was under 6 months, so just changed with every poo. Didn't change at night at all after the first couple of weeks. Only used cotton wool/cloths and water til he was 12 months though.

Now he tends to get changed 1st thing in the morning, mid-morning, mid-afternoon and bedtime - extra changes if he has done a poo.

I've found reusable cloth wipes a godsend for DD. In the week when she is at nursery and using wetwipes her bum does get sore. Never with the reusables.

Change when needed, otherwise it's just landfill. DS (14m) gets a nappy at night, a clean one in the morning, another for his lunchtime nap and that's it (except for poos).

DS had nappy rash when he was very small and what we found a godsend for him was making sure his bottom was completely dry at each change before putting the nappy cream on. We used a flannel specifically for the purpose -- the moisture left there from the water + cotton wool (later wipes) made the nappy rash worse.

Is your baby teething as nappy rash is quite common then. I tend to do as you do unless he is teething and then every couple of hours only using cotton wool and water and where possible nappy free time.
