My DS1 is almost 3 and i have been potty training him for 7 months now and don't know what to try next so am hoping someone has experience of this!

We tried 7 months ago to potty train him, persisted for 2 weeks and then put him back into nappies as he was just not getting it. I left it for a month or so then tried again and slowly he got the hang of it. He had it cracked for 3 months with the occasional accident where he just didn't make it in time and his pants would be slightly damp.

Along comes baby brother 3 weeks ago and he has reverted and now has 3 or 4 accidents per day. I know this is typical for them to regress but he shows no signs of being upset by baby brothers apperance and both DS1 and DD love him to bits.

He is now just weeing on the floor and not even bothering trying now and i just have no idea what to do next. I have tried to ignore it and praise when he uses the loo but its not improving. Should i tell him off as he knows better? I have never done this but i am feeling so frustrated with him. Should i put him back into nappies or will this do more harm?

Any advice would be appreciated!

Erm, why don't you just carry on with the potty training at a gentle pace while he is wearing the pull-ups. There's no law saying you can only do potty training without a nappy on (the DC that is, not you). I didn't take the DC's nappies off until I knew they were reliable enough at expressing their wishes in time without wetting their pants/floor. Surely it's more distressing for a child to be exposed to wet pants all the time and if they get used to that state of affairs then they associate wet pants with being normal. And soooo unhygenic for your floor.

But it's true as Shiney says that potty training is generally easier in warmer weather when there's less need to wear warm clothing.

I would go back to pull ups but still encourage use of potty or straight to loo with little seat. I potty trained my DS at roughly same age when DD came along.

A little one on one time maybe the encouragement he needs to use loo, also choose pack pants together, big jar sweets (one for wee and two or poo) helped things along.

Hope helps.

we have just potty trained ds who is 3.2. We gave him a sweetie for every wee/poo in the potty. He did really well at home and out and about with me or dh but wet himself every day at nursery (which he only started this january)

We made a sticker chart - a sticker for every dry mon-fri and a reward of his choice on saturday (something a little bit more special than a little car or cbeebies mag) we make a big deal of it and make a special trip to the shops for it.

so far so good....

I'd put him back in nappies until he pleaded with you to take them off. You have enough on your plate!!! Congratulations Grin

Thanks so much for all the advice, think i will put him back into pull ups as its not doing me or him any good continuing like this. its so frustrating as we had it cracked and i have been blaming myself that i am not giving him enough attention and thats the reason for the regress. I will give the sweetie jar a try as he does love sweets!!!!
