Baby rolling on tummy when I change nappy

My little girl is 8 months and suddenly loves rolling over. It's making nappy changing hard. She gets enraged when we put her on her back. Dealing with dirty nappies is particularly difficult and I'm worried that I'm not getting her properly clean.
Is this normal? Any tips to make changing easier would be gratefully received.

Arf, totally normal! Just wait till she gets a bit older and tries to crawl away mid-major poo clean up.

Ds had to go straight in the bath recently

Normal. What you need is a Sharp elbow to pin her down and learn to change nappy at high speed. Sometimes you can distract them by giving them something usually forbidden to play with. Other times elbow is the only way. she'll get cross but unfortunately nappy changing isn't optional.

GlitterySkulls · 30/01/2012 22:38

they do that, you just need to perfect your "pin-down-and wipe-bum-get-nappy-on-at-the-speed-of-light" technique Grin

Totally normal. You learn to be very quick!! Unfortunately it only gets worse as they get more mobile. Various ploys include having mobiles hanging from the ceiling to distract them, giving them something to play with which they wouldn't usually get eg your watch, giving them a favourite book to look at , basically anything to distract them for the 5 seconds you need once you get adept at it Smile

Oh it's flipping interminable that stage. In a few months you'll find yourself changing them standing up for an easy life. You'll just switch to pull ups and bugger it all. In the meantime you just have sing, pull faces, tickle with one hand, change the nappy with the other. Or, the best one... get some beggar else to do it for you.

Beamur · 30/01/2012 22:46

A temporary switch to pull ups helped me (assuming you're using disposables) as they are easier to get on! I also had toys that only came out during changing to try and keep baby distracted long enough. Like gincognito says, a quick bath can do the trick, or a quick hose down in the shower.

Lots of great advice - thank you! We'll see how the next nappy change goes....
You all seem to be quite amused by my first-time mum naivety!

Not amused - more like, yup, I remember that!

JollySergeantJackrum · 30/01/2012 22:55

I change DS on my knee. If we're on the sofa I give him something to play with, if we're on the floor I use the aformentioned elbow technique. It is very difficult for him to flip over when he's on my knee. I do occasionally end up with poo on my trousers though.

I think they're all amused at remembering their LO at the same stage rather than at your first time mum-ness.

JollySergeantJackrum · 30/01/2012 22:56

By the way, DS is now 9.5months and we have a lot less screaming at changing time.

seoladair · 30/01/2012 23:01

Well, it is funny! I laugh at myself, and I laugh even more at DH. (He's getting better, but doesn't cope very well with poo on his hands and clothes!)

what I did when the dds got to this stage was to sit at right angles to them when they were laid on the floor, at about their waist level. then, put one leg over their tummy, and have two hands free for a quick nappy change.

no, they don't like it.

but nappy changing is not optional.

and nappy changing without poo going everywhere is preferable. and holding them down with my leg across their tummy/chest was easier (as in far harder for them to move) than holding them down with one hand (they always managed to wriggle free when i tried).

seoladair · 30/01/2012 23:42

Great ideas, thanks ladies! Here's to the end of major nappy incidents!

:) Yep 'lockdown' and 'rarely allowed' toys are your only options Grin Most babies love the packet that wipes come in and if you save an empty one for nappy changing time it works wonders!

There is this funny thing you can buy which basically velco straps your child to the nappy changing mat, but elbows or legs work just as well!

nomoreminibreaks · 30/01/2012 23:57

Try giving them a clean nappy to play with. It's the only thing that keeps DS distracted - plus I know it'll be clean and it doesn't involve a toy possibly getting poo on it.

Almostfifty · 31/01/2012 08:50

Oh, I remember that. Floor and strong arms needed!

abigboydidit · 01/02/2012 09:48

I go with the forbidden item distraction! I've taken to wearing chunky bracelets which seem to do the job very well!

Mr Tumble works beautifully, as does Chugginton.
