Is it okay to put my DC's bed by the window?

Hello

Sorry if this is a really daft question but we have odd shaped rooms and I was wondering if it's ok to put my 4 year old DD's bed by the window? Our windows are double glazed but still a bit draughty so not sure if it would be ok.

We can lock the window so would that be okay from a safety perspective? And we have curtains and no blinds so there are no cords to worry about.

Many Thanks in advance

It's not ideal to sleep directly below a window because they do tend to create draughts but, if that's the only place the bed can go, it's not a major problem if you've got thick curtains. A locked window isn't necessarily dangerous and a 4 year-old is old enough to understand that they don't open it by themselves anyway.

Yes! It's double glazed - my four year old is directly under the window. No problems.

Brilliant. Thank you both.

Btw - we don't have locks on our windows - the kids (inbunk beds next to the window) often open them at night if they are hot - just gotta teach them to be careful!!

Does he jump on the bed? is he likely to fall out?

A draught? What on earth damage can a draught do????

CointreauVersial · 30/01/2012 19:02

Good lord, I reckon half the population must have their DC's beds by a window! I slept under one throughout my childhood, and that was before the days of window locks etc.

DS's bed is under a window, although we do live in a bungalow and he's 12, so I don't worry about him falling out. As for draughts, we very kindly gave him a duvet to sleep under. Grin

Warm pjs, warm duvet, hot water bottle (you can use one of those microwave ones if paranoid)

I was told, by someone who used to work in a hospital, not to put babies or elderly people right next to a window as they aren't as good as regulating body temperature as others and the temperature can drop sharply next to the window, even if it isn't open, or get much too hot in the sunshine. Something about how glass conducts heat.

Havn't been able to find any scientific/official links to support that advice, although I did move DSs cot away from the window just to be safe!

Thanks everyone for replying.

MsMarple, thank you. Someone had mentioned something many years ago and I think it might be what you wrote. I couldn't remember the detail, all I knew was that there was something about draughts and sleeping under windows.

So if it's young babies and the elderly, then my two should be fine.

Sorry to have asked such a daft question. I used to sleep under a window when I was younger and always felt cold, so I know it's not ideal but with our rooms it just makes sense.

Sorry again for asking a daft question. The draught was only a minor part of it and I mentioned it as my mushy post kids brain couldn't remember the detail of what I'd heard so thought I'd just check that I wasn't missing anything obvious.

The people who live across the road from us have 2 boys and a bunk bed and I've seen the boys standing on the window sill which is a bit scary as they live in a 3 storey house. Makes me cringe to think what might happen.

Thanks again.

Don't worry, OP, it wasn't the daftest question I've seen on MN, not by a long way. Grin

Not a daft question at all Smile
