Any disabled parents in Gloucestershire?

Hi,

I am a physically disabled woman, mother to a one year old boy, married and on a mission.

There must be other disabled mums and dads in my area.

Please let me know am not on my own in this county!

I plan to set up an fun babies and parents group with accessibility to creaky parents top priority. I hope to even provide two helpers to meet parents in car park for said meeting to help parents get their babies out of car seats if required. I am also a Psychologist so our group will consist of lots of fun language, music and group interaction games, all activities any parent can do with their child be it limited hand or arm movement, none of us can nor want to sit on the floor so games we can play sat on chairs etc. Most of all a place provided where no parent feels judged. Where every parent feels supported and a group that welcomes new parents and children rather than staring at them and ignoring! This is so rubbish and yet I have observed time and time again this happening to all new parents not just arthritic ones like me and husband.

Fed up of the old fashioned idea that mums stay at home so the group is a mummy and baby group, society has changed. Men, Daddies please come along too. Children excel with both male and female input.

I am 34 and it's time to drag baby groups into modern times! Please let me know if this sounds of interest.

I am very happy to get every thing sorted but I need to know if there are interested disabled parents out there. Well parents also welcome for a new inclusive fun group.

It sounds brilliant - if I had a baby I (or DH) would love to come (just over the border of Gloucs), but we have a 5 year old.

Have really enjoyed reading your blog btw

Hello, I have only just joined, mainly because I read your post.. I live in gloucester, I have just been diagonised with Lupus SLE, my health has declined draatically in last six months. I have three little girls, 2,4,7 - so not sure if the age of my girls would be ok - but would still be interested to chat as I am new to this... I am not sure if you would class my condition as disabled, but I use a walking stick a lot the time, have a lot of OT support and have been offered the hydrotheraphy pool... we are having to consider home help and support as my husband works long hours and shifts at night and weekends, so any knowledge you have of any local ones would be great. My middle daughter is sisabled, she has ASD, sensory processing difficulties, and bialateral hearing aids. So I guess anything like you are suggesting in the Gloucester area would be of great interest to me.

Look forward to hearing back.

Sarah

Hi.

I totally do not discriminate as to what is disabled. Seriously do not worry, I have arthritis and refuse to spend my days in a wheelchair which does not mean I am more well than those arthritics who are in a chair and I don't blame them as it kills to walk often, but I just have grown up hating the darn things. So sticks, chairs or just two legs but pain behind eyes I can see real disabled people.

Lupus is horri, I know it is v similar to arthritis. I have a friend in Gloucester too who has it but it is more a skin and tiredness in her at the moment, not a full attack on her system like yours sounds.

It is all being mulled over, I need to get the children centres involved with putting adverts up for group etc.

I would have an age limit up to 5 years old as the kind of activities we could all manage to do with our children would be much more seated at a table making things, singing songs, reading a story etc.

I could just above all do with knowing I am not an alien in Gloucester. I am so disheartened with the zero help we have been given. I feel often quite alone and think surely there are other parents in my area to who I could talk to and share understanding.

Really glad you contacted me. I don't have carers but have an assistant dog from canine partners who loads and unloads a washing machine, picks up my sons toys at the end of the day and puts them in his toy box, she helps me get on and off the floor when I am playing with him on the floor. So much better than a human carer! Reliable, good with kids, brings shopping in from the car so so much. Look at Canine Partners web site, what a godsend.

How does your lupus effect you, what things do you especially struggle with, maybe private message me any thing further.

I have just got a Maxi Cisi Axiss so my hubby and I can access my son in his car seat and so can take him out at last!!!! So am thinking of looking at good play places for children and reviewing them with disabled parents in mind. My info folders I am making for Children's centres to recruit for a group meeting are getting huge in information, bet you have another lot you could offer to it for older children.

Please stay in touch, so so nice to know my husband and I are not alone in Gloucester, that other creaky parents and children with creaky parents for my son to not feel alone, exist out there.

Ps love this site, parents are such ace people! All my friends are well but singletons and find it hard being around a one year old healthy, crawling at speed of light child haha, bit of a shock to their systems bless their hearts.
No county discriminated either. So lady just out the border, come on down will let you know of developments.

Hi there,

I live in Churchdown and have ME/CFS. I have a four month old son, but have so far been too nervous to go to any parent and child groups because of the fear that other mum's won't understand the physical limitations caused by my condition. A group for parents all in the same boat sounds fab.....

SunnyCarrie · 03/07/2012 11:31

Too right Flowerz, don't worry about not being able to get out with a four month old it is pointless, dad helped me get my son out to a bounce and rhyme group and son got nothing out of it at 4 months, he is now 17 months and might get something out of it now.

I blog so do check out about me on there cos would be so nice to have another friend in same situation. I totally understand how you feel and maybe we can eventually get courage up to go to a bounce and rhyme in Hucclecote together? Hope so would be nice to not feel on our own.

Chat soon. Hope to maybe get our heads together about forming a group.
