hi everyone
Ds2 born at 27 weeks, came home last friday, trouble is he does not want to burp... Very confused
Have tried infacol, works at the start, but after having 20 mls of milk he stops again and needs burping , but he struggles, have tried everyother technique(taught by nurse at hospital) to burp but does not help, and its affecting his feed, just has about 30 to 50 mls max in 5 hrs.
Can i give him gripe water, tough he is technically not reached his due date yet? Any idea/views will help?
Thanks

Have you tried infacol? It can help to bring wind up. We used it with dc1 with some success. Her feeding and wind difficulties turned out to be intolerance-related (to the food I was eating) so if his nappies are suspect or he has bad griping pains, poor sleep, arching during feeding then ask your mw/hv/gp about milk intolerance.

Are you bf or ff? if ff, have you tried a different size/type of teet? Maybe he's gulping down too much air. Also, have you tried altering the position he's in when you feed him?

Have tried infacol, helps at first but stops again after 20 mls, he is bottle fed with enfamil as he suffers from reflux.

Are you sure he needs to burp? Maybe he's not windy after all? Not all babies are windy - my DD doesn't always need to burp after a feed.

Lovelyboys · 23/01/2012 18:32

Have tried several tears at hospital and advent suits bests, oh he is definitely needs burping as he sticks his legs up and makes a noise as if he is having discomfort till he burps and then settles himself down
Have also experimented with milk before doctor suggested enfamil and it helps him throw up less

Hold him up to your shoulder and give a few short bounces (your body) followed by a wiggle. Do this a few times in a row, or put him down and try again when he's ready. Burps can take a while to be ready.

DD does this. Best ways are to him her so she's as upright as possible for a bit and she brings up wind after a bit. Or lie her on her side, head on my right facing me and she wriggles and after a few minutes it comes out. I find it hard to get out by patting!

I wouldn't give your baby gripe water - it's meant for 1 month plus. I would take the day you came home as day 1 and work a month forward from there.

Mine was like this too - she just wouldn't burp and then end up with terrible trapped wind. I found that Dentinox Colic drops in the bottle worked better for us than Infacol - I'm not sure if it was bad but we used both together for a little while. We tried gripe water at 1 month but it didn't work for her.

You could also look up the 'tiger in the tree' hold and also there are some strokes in baby massage that help to ease trapped wind - there are demos on YouTube. I also used a figure of eight back rub which seemed to be more effective than normal patting.

Thanks iggly, tried putting him on my right and it works most if the time, it's a lot better than patting him.Smile
Thanks coke machine-infacol is not properly working for my DS2 as well , even he suffers from trapped wind, i could yry for ages and even them he won't burp -might try the drops, it should be available over the counter from any pharmacy.. Right? Never heard about them before. Smile

Finally got hold of the Dentinox colic drops , just after 1 ounce has to sit him up straight and he burped on his own for the first time , don't even do anything, fingers cross hope it works for meSmile
Thanks again.
