How much sleep is too much sleep for 15 m/o?!

He slept through the night for 12 hours since he was about 5 months old.

Routine's always been the same since then, he wakes between 6 and 7 goes down for a nap between 9 and 10, usually for an hour and a half and then goes down again about 3 for an hour and a half.

Over the past 2/3 weeks he's been napping longer and longer each time, I put him down at 10 and he slept till 1, then he's tired again at 4 so I put him down and had to wake him up at half 6!!

I put it down to him recovering fr sickness bug to start with but he's all clear of it now but is still sleeping.

I'm very much of the rule if he's tired let him sleep till he wakes of his own doing. But am starting to worry he's becoming lazy! Lol.

If I wake him from his naps he's grumpy as hell by the way, and usually he's the happiest kid in the land.

Maybe it's just growth spurt time?

Any advice would be lovely!

My DS was similar at that age. Didn't drop his morning nap until he started nursery age 3.5! Didn't drop the afternoon nap until he started full time school (and even then managed to nod off during afternoon story-time more than once). My view is that if a child isn't tired, it won't sleep no matter what you do. So if he's sleeping and especially if he's grumpy if you wake him up too soon, I'd leave him to it. Just make sure he's lively the rest of the time and keep an eye on things like nutrition and hydration as a deficiency of either leads to 'lethargy' ... which is different to 'tired'. Obviously, if you're really worried, talk to your HV or GP... they'll check him over.

Fabulous thank you, your advice is exactly my opinion, he doesn't stop as soon as he gets up, constantly climbing, crawling, being bribed by mammy to try and walk, reading and playing. It tires me out! He's eating well drinking well, peeing and pooping well, so I'm not worried about his health. I'll give it another week or so, thank you for your advice Grin

I used to say my DS only had two settings 'on' or 'off'. :) He was full-on busy when he was awake but the minute he looked tired and lay down he was like one of those dollies with eyes that close in the horizontal.... out like a light for ages at a stretch. MN wasn't around then but I'm sure, if I'd read all the horror stories about children that don't nap for more than 20 minutes or don't sleep through the night until they're five years old I'd have started wondering if mine was normal or not.

Had to laugh the day I picked him up from reception class and was told by the serious-faced teaching assistant that he'd fallen asleep again at story-time. "Does he get enough sleep at home?" she asked, obviously thinking we're a bunch of night-owls. "About 12 hours average" was my reply. Hmm Asked DS what happened and his explanation was simple. "I was all nice and warm on the carpet and then the teacher read us a bed-time story...." Zzzzzzzz Grin

Lol I love that. I think that's what he's gonna be like, when he's older he'll be one of those kids that falls asleep in odd places. He's only napped for 2 hours this morning which is better. I feel bad for complaining that he sleeps too much :s
