My 4 yr old ds came home from school on wednesday with a temperature, barking cough and headache. Spent all night burning up and coughing. Took him to the doc the next morning (yesterday) and just got calpol. He seemed to buck up and played all afternoon but then last night his temperature was higher than ever and he says his ears sore when hen yawns?? This morning he is still the same although wants me to play with him. Should i take him back to the g.p? He had the mmr last week and i can't help but worry that it's that thats caused it.

we have had this...lasts for ages - viral in our case

codswallop · 14/11/2003 09:35

try nurofen too

There's loads going round at the moment. ds1's nursery has 14 out of 23 children off. Ds1 has spent the whole week on the sofa (today is the first day since Saturday morning that he's actually sat up playing). Ds2 has it as well- started on Tuesday- but yesterday wasn't to bad- then woke up with temp of 41 this morning. It doesn't sound like a serious MMR reaction to me (although certainly children get temps after it). Keep an eye on him and take him back if you're worried. It doesn't sound like the reaction that parents of MMR damaged describe so I wouldn't get too paranoid probably the doctors favourite- a virus......

My dd has this for the second time in a month and now ds has it also. Gp said give them calpol and a cough medicine as dd keeps being sick when coughing. It's horrible - one minute raging temperature then back to normal. Can't believe dd has had this twice in a month - should do her immune system good though I suppose.

Dr. Wallop prescribes sleep and Tv

YOu keepo thinking they are better and then they get worse

Hmm I am optimism pesonified today!

Took my ds back to the doctor this evening, without even really looking at him he said right well if he's still having fevers i'll give him some antibiotics. I asked whether it could be the mmr that has caused this and he just said, yeah well it's like having mini measles! His face has strated to look pretty blotchy since we got back and he really is more poorly than i have known him before, i would imagine like a milder dose of measles but why didn't anyone tell me that beforehand? A faint rash 10-14 days after the nurse told me?? I'm feeling quite worried now.

linziod sorry to hear your little ds is not well
just give him plenty of fluids and if at all concerned take him to the out of hours gp
better safe than sorry
hope he gets better soon

btw my ds had something similar to this a couple of weeks back and was very ill (virus)

Jimjams · 14/11/2003 22:41

linzoid- f it is a mini measles the rash comes up in very particular order- behind the ears, forehead and face and then spreads downwards, blotchy and also slightlly raiised in places. My friend's dd had it after the MMR but she wasn't ill at all- just the rash.

If you are worried see if you can get a bit of cod liver oil into him for the vitamin A (you can buy it in malt extract which tastes quite nice). Vitamin A supplements are no good as they are derived from veg and so contain carotenes and not retinol- and its retinol you need- any fish oils will do. Don't take for too long as excess retinol is not good for you, but a couple of doses whilst ill won't do any harm (and if he is having a mini measles will do a lot of good).

Can't see the point of giving him antibiotics unless the doc is sure he has a bacterial infection. probably worth giving him probiotics as well.

The good news if it is mini measles is that you know the damm thng has worked for sure and he'll probably get a good 20 years or so protection.

Mind you linziod my 2 are still wiped out with this flu bug (and cough) ds1 started his 8th day on the sofa today and ds2's temperature has gone up to 41 again after going down yesterday. It may just be this nasty virus. I spoke to nursery this morning and out of 23 children 14 were off with it.

linzoid · 15/11/2003 15:22

Hope your two are soon on the mend Jimjams, 8 days seems a long time to be poorly. I couldn't understand either why the g.p told me it was viral one day and gave antibiotics the next. Think he just wanted to get home, mind you i've always found him to be pretty hopeless and considering changing.
Just been reading about this flu that turns into pneumonia. What should i look out for? Ds is very chesty and temperature is up again this afternoon. The gp never even listened to his chest yesterday. I can't help worry as i've never know him have a temp longer than 48 hours before.

I'm watching for the pneumonia with ds2 as wel....- not sure but there are other threads under health. Things like shallow breathing, blue lips I guess.

DS1 is a lot better today- I took him to the papershop- first trip outside the house for a week for him. Ds2 still has a temp but only 39ish now.

Flu can knock you out for ages. I've had a mild dose and I feel pretty shattered and headachy.
