When did u leave LO over night with babysitter?

CharlieMumma · 14/01/2012 21:54

Iv not left my ds yet overnight - he is 11 months. I will be leaving him in may when he will be 15 mo this as I have a hen night and wedding in that month both too far away to come home.

Am just curious when others have left their LO for first time. A few friends have done it at 3 weeks and one at 4 months but for nights in with partners sort of a date night.

Any thoughts?

I left my little one with my Mum and Dad overnight when I had my work xmas doo. She was 5 weeks.

I personally feel comfortable with leaving her with them or my OH's Mum. She is 9 weeks now and has stayed overnight a couple of times since then too. Once for a date night as you put it and once when we went out for a meal with friends.

I dont think I could leave her with anyone else, they are the only people I trust with her 100% but I realise Im very lucky to have my family living so close to me and them being so willing to have her and others dont have this luxury.

I'm leaving ds with my family to, they babysit him most often and we have all stayed there so he is used to it. I'm such a wimp i couldn't have left him before!

Errh NEVER. Our children are now between the ages of 6 and 15.

Our children have done sleepovers as young as 3 years old, but only to trusted friends / relatives. I've also taken friend's children overnight from 15 months old, but they were more like family. The children first did without me and milk supply at the age of between 18 months and 2 1/2 years, when I did night shifts at work and hubby had them, the last one was to stop breastfeeding!!!!!

I'm a very liberal parent, I allow our children perhaps more freedom than would be expected in the UK (we are in Belgium) in that the 10 year old can take the tram alone, put on at one end by me and met 5 minutes later by hubby, she can walk to the pool alone, I will soon trust our soon to be 16 year old to look after our 6 year old, I send the 15 year old to the shops with the 6 year old, but leaving them overnight without a parent happens only with people I trust. Oh the 6 year old also went on a residential for 3 nights with school aged 4 (shock horror), again I know the teachers quite well, they were in a group setting. But to leave the children with "a babysitter" overnight, well that would have to be a babysitter I really do trust. Why can't dad, grandma, sister have the baby, or otherwise why don't you take a babysitter with you? I am just saying this from a security point of view, your son at 11 months might miss you but is not going to suffer life-long trauma from being without his mum.

My parents had dd overnight at 3yrs 8 months. I hated it. We tried again in the run up to ds being born. She was 4 and a bit. It's fine but I really miss her when she goes for sleepovers.

How long's a piece of string...

CharlieMumma · 14/01/2012 22:14

He is being left with family - they will 'babysit' I don't mean a random stranger babysitter.

My mum had DS1 and DD1 for five days when they were 2 1/2 and 11 months. We had just got married, and had five days honeymoon alone, then she flew out to Corsica to meet us with the DCs for another week. I missed them every day, but they were with someone I trusted 100%, so there wasn't a problem.

Broodzilla · 14/01/2012 22:34

Just about to spend my first ever night apart from DS. He's 27 months.

Olbasoil · 15/01/2012 08:14

Never with a babysitter and only with my mum when I was in hospital.

MyLifeIsStillChaotic · 15/01/2012 08:25

ds1 is 3.1. I have never had him sleep anywhere other than where I am, apart from when he was at home with dh and I was in hospital after having given birth to ds2 earlier that evening. Horses for courses, there's just nobody in the world I trust with my children other than dh. If I did have someone I could trust, I would.

CointreauVersial · 15/01/2012 12:42

Blimey, I guess I'm lucky to have my mum. It's not as if we are out every night, but it makes such a difference if you are (say) invited to a no-kids wedding to be able to leave the DCs safely overnight. My mum loves having them, too.

ShowOfHands · 15/01/2012 13:27

My parents live v close, as do ILs. They love the dc, help out lots and see them several times a week. They would have dd to stay every weekend if we asked, I would trust them 100%.

I just don't want to. Grin

tribpot · 15/01/2012 13:30

Never, unless you count very occasional business trips when I've left him at home with his dad.

In theory I should enjoy the chance for uninterrupted sleep (not that that's generally a problem at home now anyway) but in reality I don't. He's six.

matana · 15/01/2012 15:23

DS was 10 months when he stayed with my parents overnight. I had left him for a few evenings before then but never for more than a few hours. I still don't like doing it (just because i miss him and my DH and i like to take him most places we go) and sometimes feel under pressure to do it more just so my family get to spend time with him. I work FT so my time with him is precious, but he's getting to an age now (14mo) when he enjoys the company of others - especially those with children. He has great fun with people he knows and loves well.

Flisspaps · 15/01/2012 15:26

I've never left 22mo DD with anyone overnight.

Not even with DH Blush

If I needed to I would, but I've always preferred to come home after a night out rather than stay in a hotel or someone else's house, not just since DD was born.

If I end up in hospital for any reason with DC2, then that will be the first night I've spent away from DD :(

SauvignonBlanche · 15/01/2012 15:27

DS was 9yrs old the first time, DD was much younger as she was 6. It was the same night, our 11th wedding anniversary.
I did it as a surprise as DH was unsure about leaving them so young.

CharlieMumma · 15/01/2012 16:08

I haven't really felt the need to yet either and the only reason we are is because the wedding is no children and much to far away to come home. Will miss him far more than he misses us most probably !!

I have never left my 14 mo old overnight.

I have left her for the evening with my in laws once or twice, but we have always gone back to sleep there ourselves after we've been out.

DD was bf at least once at night until she was around 11 mo, but even leaving this fact aside, I think grandparents having to deal with night wakings is slightly above and beyond the call of duty. But that's just my opinion.

I'm not a clingy parent, I'm happy to leave her all day and she goes to nursery 3 days a week. But at night is a different story, I know her and I know she only wants mummy or daddy if she wakes up at night. Can't see that changing any time soon either.

hardboiledpossum · 15/01/2012 19:38

DS is 11 months and I have left him overnight with my partner only, for about 8 nights in total, starting when he was 4 months old. I wouldn't really feel comfortable leaving him with anyone else for now.

Greythorne · 15/01/2012 19:41

Left DD1 with my sister when Dd1 was 23 months for three nights.

Left DD1 and dd2 with my parents when they were 4.6 and 2.6 for three nights.

Never left them any ither time.

StetsonsAreCool · 15/01/2012 19:49

I've left DD overnight 3 times - twice with my mum, once with DH. Once a month for the last 3 months. The first was a practice run for the second time, which was my work Christmas party, the third I went to visit a friend too far away to drive home afterwards.

There was no way she was ready before 16 months, but she coped very well when we did leave her, was reliably sleeping through, or only having cuddles/water if she did wake. My mum was absolutely itching to have her overnight too. I think if there hadn't have been a good reason to have DD sleepover, she might have locked us out after babysitting only half joking

Have a practice run a couple of weeks before, so that he and your parents know what to expect.

Dee03 · 15/01/2012 19:57

I left my first ds with my parents overnight when he was about 6 weeks old I think...Smile

Broodzilla · 15/01/2012 20:41

flisspaps: feel the need to update (I was too upset last night to "disclose"... Left DS for the first time because I had to spend a night in hospital for monitoring (38+2 with DC2). I felt really bad, because like you had anticipated having to leave him while I'm in labour, and it felt somehow like I was now leaving him for no good reason...

He was at home with DH (his dad!) and had actually slept through which is very very unusual. I, of course, didn't sleep a wink...

In hindsight, I'm glad we've had a trial run because at least now when I actually AM in labour (whenever DC2 is ready...) I will hopefully not be fretting so much about leaving DS and can concentrate on the task at hand...

Just something to think about?

(and he called me this morning when he'd woken up to say he missed me and wanted mama cuddles... Nearly broke my heart...)

CointreauVersial · 15/01/2012 20:58

Broodzilla - hope you are OK.

Yesmynameis - I guess I hadn't considered the "burden on grandparents" issue, because mine all slept through from 2 months. I also have a very young mum!

ShowOfHands · 15/01/2012 21:04

When my waters broke with ds it was 2am. I got into bed with a sleeping dd,curled myself round her and sobbed at the very thought of leaving her.

CharlieMumma · 16/01/2012 09:12

My ds sleeps through to so have no concerns he will be keeping my dad awake. He's slept there before with me and dp so don't think he will be worried at all- I will be the one whose upset!
