When did you start using soap on your DCs?

I'm still in the habit of allowing DD (20mo) to just splash about in the bath and have fun rather than using it as a functional washing opportunity (unless she's had a particularly muddy/sandy day).

What's the general feeling about when baths are about proper washing rather than just being an habitual part of the bedtime routine?

I still only really bother soaping muddy/sandy/painty bits in the bath and DS1 is over 3. I guess I'll start using it more when he starts seeming to need it more, at the moment he just doesn't seem that smelly or dirty most of the time.

from the first bath- the midwife did it, so i doubt it's damaging.

Baths for us have always been about washing, never part of a bedtime routine.

DS is 5 and DD is 3, they've never used soap. They had excema as babies so have always stuck to water. Just shampoo their hair.

Sometimes they have a Lush bath bomb, but that's it.

USed soap on ds3 just before his first birthday - he was playing with ds2s wellies and I noticed they had dog poo on them Shock

My DD is 2.3 and we use soap very occasionally now, if muddy or painty. Certainly wouldn't from birth, history of ecezma in the family so played it safe. Babies really don't need soap anyway - my midwives said just water as far as i remember - never used baby wipes either.

Use baby soap which is very inexpensive!
I use baby wash for my 20mo and his skin doesnt seem remotely affected by it!

Yesmynameis · 15/01/2012 18:17

I've used baby wash or mild soap of some description pretty much since day one.

Bathtimes have always been primarily about a good wash, followed by some play time.

I know the advice is that water is sufficient, but I didn't find it to be so. DD was a massively sicky baby and water just didn't seem to cut the mustard when trying to remove layer after layer of bm and sick from her face and neck and hair.

Later, once we started BLW DD used to get in a terrible mess after dinner times. Covered in food anywhere and everywhere!

She's 14 mo now, and we've always used soap of some kind and always given her a good scrub in the bath, she loves it and finds it relaxing. We recently bought DD a bottle of baby shampoo as well, as her hair is getting quite wild long now.

We don't use soap on ds (though we do shampoo his hair sometimes). He's 3.
Oh he does use soap when hand washing of course, but not in the bath!
I don't use soap either, just water (skank) as it irritates my skin, i don't smell (honest!) and feel perfectly clean without it!
