Creases in a baby's neck

Not sure if this is the right place to post. How do you keep the creases in a baby's neck clean and dry. I really struggle with 5 month dd, can occasionally get a good look while she's breastfeeding, try to lay her on her side and dry her well after a bath but she pushes her chin towards her chest to 'close up' the creases and I find it difficult to dry properly. Sometimes her neck smells a little like earwax and also sometimes is a bit red in the creases. I have tried drying tonight then rubbed a bit of sudocrem on as it looked a bit sore, but is this right or will it keep the creases moister and increase the soreness. Please help I hope I'm not the only person who finds this difficult. How can I encourage her to tilt her head back more so I can get to her neck?

I hope I don't sound really bad, she is well looked after, her neck isn't really awful and it doesn't seem to be causing her any bother, I'd just like some tips on how to be able to clean and dry it better. Tia

I'm on my phone and trying to feed dd at the same time. Just read that back and apologise for missing question marks and big chunk of writing all together. Hope it's not too difficult to read.

small babies necks are really hard to keep clean and nice. I remember using sudocreme too. Have you tried wiping with cotton wool and water then drying while she is asleep?

Sausagesarenottheonlyfruit · 08/01/2012 19:17

You're not alone! DS is 5m and his neck creases are quite deep (double chin crevice, you understand).

No real advice here, i just try to get him into a semi reclined position, often he'll tilt head back to peer at something behind him. Then I swoop in with a cotton pad.

Also try to talc under there after a bath, using fingers! Not puffing it in his face!

Same here with dd 11 weeks. I try and prise open Grin

Dd had stinky ear flaps at top. Only just noticed this weekend Blush it's where milk dribbles and I've not spotted it.

BurntWitch · 08/01/2012 19:22

Hi. My 4 month dd has the same problem, her neck creases can get really red and stinky! I place her on her back across my knees twice a day and just wipe the creases first with a wet flannel, and then a dry one. I found that it improved within a day or two. When she is on her back in that position she doesn't seem to mind that her head rolls back (I think she likes to look at everything upside down!) and this makes it easy to get into those chubby little creases! Grin

Thank you! Stupidly I haven't tried any 'do it while she's distracted' techniques, have been pretty blatant about it with a towel after a bath and understandably ended up with a slightly cross baby. I will try when asleep (scary, please don't wake up!) and also when she's looking up at something.

Thanks for the tips, that seems quite obvious now you say it. And thanks for the reassurance I'm not alone, I felt a bit Sad that I couldn't do it properly (paranoid first time mum).

Yes, my dd gets the crusty ear thing too mama! I also have to check the creases right at the back of the ears every day, they sometimes get quite funky too!

Considering they don't do an awful lot, these babies can be quite disgusting little creatures!!

whostolemyname · 08/01/2012 19:41

No tips but just to say you are not the only one!

MamaMaiasaura · 08/01/2012 20:04

Burntwitch - I gonna try the laying across legs thing. Smile they do get stinky. Dd has cheesy feet and tie and finder fluff Grin she's also very fat cuddly and has several creases on her thunder thighs

BurntWitch · 08/01/2012 20:07

Yep, toe end finger fluff too! I usually notice bits of filth here and there on her when somebody else is having a hold of her! Blush

MamaMaiasaura · 08/01/2012 20:37

Lol yup, deep in their hand creases gets filthy. We have dirty children lol

NoGoodAtHousework · 08/01/2012 20:51

We use funky giraffe bibs which are like a bandana type dribble bib. They are ace and cheap when you buy a few.
Since my LO has had them his chin doesn't get bad at all from dribble. Also when feeding, instead of using a bib we use muslin wrapped round the front of his neck making sure its right under chin. That has helped massively with whiffy milk skankness under there!

No actual help to offer - but I did once find a bit of falafel in DS's neck flab. Blush

krustyloaf · 09/01/2012 03:05

I've found my DS 5m, that if I lie him down flat then hold a toy at an angle that makes him twist his so he's almost rolling over, thus lifting his neck/head back, I can see under his biffa rolls Grin Genuinely works but only if the little fatty they haven't learnt to roll over yet! HTH

krustyloaf · 09/01/2012 03:07

Also hahaha Sparkle proper loled about the falafel! I'm not that fancy, you'll probably find bits of a Gregs sausage roll in DS's biffa neck Grin

hardboiledpossum · 09/01/2012 20:38

I used to wash DSs neck whilst he was doing tummy time and he was lifting his head of the ground, that seemed to be the best position to have a proper clean.

candr · 10/01/2012 14:37

I do it while he is laying on my legs in the bath with a flannel and use olive oil after bath, can be hard to get him to open his grubby hands though. How does something so small get so stinky???

Seeline · 10/01/2012 14:42

Wait til they all start on solids - that's when teh fun really begins Wink

Vix286 · 10/01/2012 15:33

Thank god its not just my DD, same neck crease issue and this weekend I noticed she was crusty behind her ears! Will try some of the tips on here as I am worried people will notice she does she may start to smell funny......

sunshineoutdoors · 10/01/2012 16:59

Hooray! I don't feel like a crap mum anymore!

Ok how do we deal with crust ear holes as don't want to poke around there.

Wigeon · 10/01/2012 18:38

Just google "neck cheese" or do a search on here and you'll find you are not alone!

I wave a toy up over DD2's head, or lie her on my lap on her back and tilt her head backwards. Or just prise rather forcefully. Don't try when she's asleep - guaranteed to wake up I'd think!

If red, sudocream is a good idea. Otherwise just remembering to wipe every day (afraid to say I often forget Blush). If you don't, then it can get all sore and even weepy .
