Should I give up potty training my 3 year old?

My DD is 3 this week and I've been trying to potty train since Christmas (thought the holidays would help being home etc). We've had no success at all. She knows when she's done a wee in ordinary nappies and when she wants a poo, she gets all upset- like she knows she should be doing it in the potty/toilet but would rather do it in her pants. So then she holds on. She also says things like "wees and poos go in the potty."
We bought a book yesterday about potty training (the "I Want my Potty" sort of thing) for us to read together so do I persevere and hope it "clicks" or give it up for now?

I would give it up for a few weeks to be honest, I potty trained my twins (I'm a nanny) when they were 2 and a half, older one got it in two days, younger one hadn't a clue, gave up, tried again 4 weeks later and had it in two days.

Thanks to you both for your responses. I have a feeling that the best thing to do is to put it on the "back burner" but not abandon it altogether. DD goes to playgroup 2 afternoons a week with lots of other potty/toilet trained children so I'm hoping that she'll pick something up from them.
Cod- I have been dipping in to your thread so I might join in a few weeks time.
Callaird- I was also a Nanny so have potty trained a few children. Have found potty training other people's children easier!
