pacifier / dummy?? I did with dd and never regreted it, she was only ever aloud it in bed.

Pregnant with DS I was determine not to have one, but got given some as baby gifts, DS is 4weeks old and not and sleeps an hour and a half, wake an hour at night and he bealy sleeps during the day. He feeds soo much and like to comfort suck on my boob to go to sleep, but will wake when I take him off it. Between lack of sleep, earthquakes and dd I'm lucky to get 4hours a sleep anight.... Am feeling I may give him a dummy but feel like uv failed as this is not what u wanted to do.

Did u give ur baby a dummy? Or not? What are your reasons for and against?

I'm very interested in peoples opinions

I gave DD1 a dummy, because she would suck on a finger for ages and seemed to need it to settle. Plus I heard about it being recommended to prevent SIDS. She took a little persuading but eventually took a cherry shaped one.

She then gave it up completely by her own choice at 8 months so I never had any regrets.

DD2 on the other hand just refused point blank, no matter what type/shape we tried.

DS is almost 3wks old, he's had a dummy since day 3.
We only give it to him at night, and it really helps to settle him in the moses basket.

Like a few other posters, I only agreed to the idea as it's supposed to prevent SIDs. We're going to get rid of it when he starts self soothing.

I do get slightly when I see toddlers walking around with them all the time (not just for soothing at night/naps), as I've known a few kids (myself & DB included) who ended up with buck teeth/slow speech development, and although not sure it's the dummies fault I don't want to take the risk with DS.

I gave my dd one at one month, and at 4 months she was only allowed it in bed. She used it for a year or so, then gave it up about 16 months.

my first three never had them, then no 4 sucks his thumb and still does ages 3yrs.

dd is 13mths and has a dummy, she needed it from about 3-4mths old it just helps her to settle and sleep, she generally only has it at naptime and bedtime and sometimes in the pushchair/carseat.

have to say there was a stage where it was a pita as it kept falling out in the night, but we co-sleep so i became adept at feelnig round in the dark, locating it and plugging her bag in! i use the avent ones and they do glow in the dark ones which are great for nigthtime! dd now replaces her own dummy in the night generally, but tbh i dont think she uses it much once asleep, its just to get her to sleep.

i dont plan on letting her walk around with it in as she gets older, but unless tired or like i said in the carseat/pushchair she doesnt seem to want it anyway.
