Do all 22wk old babies really sleep all night?

My DS (DC1) is 22 weeks old today and sleeps from about 8pm till 10am, but wakes twice (sometimes thrice) for a quick feed and back to sleep - about 15 minutes at a time, he is EBF. I was fine with this but every family member and health visitor tells me all babies sleep all night at this stage. I'm starting to panic I've messed up and I've ruined his sleeping forever!

Also concerned cause I rock him to sleep sometimes.

Oh I am sooooo glad for all your responses!

Promise definitely not a stealth boast - thing is I was really happy with his sleeping till everyone and their aunt told me he should be sleeping all night.

I thought about lying and saying he is but I feel then like I'm perpetuating the myth - assuming it is a myth.

Ha ha ha. DD just turned 9 months and her record is four hours straight and that's a rare thing.

33goingon64 · 04/01/2012 16:44

Sounds completely normalto me. Some people are lucky I guess but then a baby that starts sleeping through that early will surely have many lapses later on! DS (10 months) started sleeping from 7.30 to 6.30 consistently about 2 weeks ago. Ignore HVs - on certain subjects (eating, sleeping, actually most things) they do not know what they are talking about.

jaggythistle · 04/01/2012 16:50

my DS was also about 10 months when he started reliably sleeping through. It was apparently completely random before that.

Also i made A Rod for my back by always feeding him at night if he wanted it and this appeared to have no effect on his ability to get to or stay asleep. He's 2yo and pretty good now.

DC2 due in about 4 months though....

Quenelle · 04/01/2012 17:08

Nope.

The HV is either stupid or lying to suggest that is the norm.

mumwithdice · 04/01/2012 17:21

Still think fluffyanimal said it best.

Haribolicious · 04/01/2012 17:37

If only Grin my DCs were both EBF and slept similar to yours. Can't remember DS1 but DS2 only started sleeping through at 17 months. Between 14-16 mths he would generally only wake up once around 12/1 am after going down at 7pm. Don't worry...every baby is different...unless you're not happy with the routine...just go with it.

jaggythistle · 04/01/2012 18:42

I wanted to say 'what fluffyanimal said' as well Grin

What a load of bollocks (scuse French!) I hate it when so called professionals do this, it knocks your confidence. My dd is 22 weeks on Saturday and she has a similar pattern to your DS, bed at around 7pm with a feed then feeds at approx 11, 1am, 4am and 8am (although wakes around 7 but never wants a feed on waking). Sometimes she's dropped one of them and sometimes she adds one (or two..) I was completely prepared for feeding thru the night as she's breastfed but so many people are shocked when u say she isn't; followed by "give her a bottle of formula" or "start her on some baby rice"..... f**k off normally comes to mind but I'm always polite... ;-)

Sounds like u are doing a fab job, if your happy, DS will be top x

Lol fluffyanimal x

jaggythistle · 04/01/2012 20:17

" f**k off normally comes to mind" Grin

Will keep that in mind for impending DC2 when I am asked every day if it's normal for them to feed that often. I had no confidence with DS as I had no idea!

InmaculadaConcepcion · 04/01/2012 20:32

DD was 13 months when she slept through for the first time.

I've now formed the opinion that "good sleepers" (ie going through the night from about six months) are NOT in the majority....!

LB1983 · 04/01/2012 20:44

Jaggythistle - I'm always so polite but since becoming a mum in august I am really shocked at the amount of opinions thrown about as though i must accept what they say as gospel! I have had family and 'friends' (loose term..!) be especially critical about my own decisions to raise my child ie to breastfeed, to not start feeding till 6 months, to plan BLW, to have 12 months off work, to co sleep, to not read and/or follow gina ford....the list is endless). People can be very judgemental, I've developed a tough skin, sarcasm & lots more swear words :-)

moonwalk · 04/01/2012 20:46

to make it short:

DC1: Sleeping all night? In own bed? no way!!! I think at that age we started sleep training (also in preparation to DC2 born)
DC2: Has been a great sleeper until about 17 months... is going through a very clingy phase right now, which also happens at night... Has always woken up for a night feed (bottle of milk) though.

moonwalk · 04/01/2012 20:47

Blush Sorry... totally wrong thread... i read 22 months old babies, not 22 weeks.... there you go... good luck Smile

DressingGownQueen · 04/01/2012 20:49

Erm...no

RillaBlythe · 04/01/2012 20:52

Bloody hell no. Dd1 slept through at 22 months. Dd2 has 6 wks to step up to the mark...

lilbitneurotic · 04/01/2012 20:52

Ha- I think he's heard I'm doubting him - 10 to 9 and he's still awake!

jaggythistle · 04/01/2012 20:53

LB I also got quite a bit of hassle for the 6 month thing and bfing 'on demand'. Suited my laziness quite well actually Grin Just taking my boobs everywhere was much easier...

Until about 28 weeks DS was doing this. He went down at 7:30pm woke twice or three times a night and wouldn't go back to sleep without a BF then woke for the day around 7am. I got these BFs down to 2 minutes on one side maximum so I knew he wasn't waking from hunger, just for the company then we did CC at around 28 weeks and he's not fed in the night since (now 8.5 months).

smellsofreindeersick · 04/01/2012 21:07

Oh that's a good one . Check out the sleep threads OP. There's a huge range of sleepers and no norm to speak of.

If it helps any, I found topping up before bed and a dream feed about 11 helped. By topping up I mean with expressed if you're still EBF.

22 weeks. Sheesh.

pointythings · 04/01/2012 21:34

Erm - no.

DD1 - EBF, went from 8-ish till 7-ish from 10 weeks old but with dream feed at 10pm. Boy was I a lucky sod, and smug too.

DD2, EBF, a twice a night merchant until she was nearly a year - down at 8, feed at 11.30 and 2.30 like clockwork. Still, she was a both sides in 15 minutes merchant so I knew it wasn't comfort sucking and it never took long - quick burp and straight down again for both of us. I was still a lucky sod, though not so smug any more.

They were both great sleepers after one year bar a few very minor blips with night terrors and so on.

ninkynonker · 05/01/2012 14:40

Hahahaha, no!! That sounds amazing.
