Motherease nappies advice please!

I've just bought a load of 2nd hand motherease nappies and I'm not getting on too well with them. dd2 is soaked through every morning. I'm putting a fleece liner and using a waterproof wrap. Should I be doing anything else?

Also, the wraps are rubbing her legs and she's getting red marks. Do all wraps do this? Can anybody recommend any good ones?

Thank you!

thwe wetness takeas a bit of getting used to if you have switched from dispoables. have you got any snap in boosters? try doing the wrap slightly looser as well.

starlover · 12/01/2006 20:24

do you have the boosters that popper in?
which wraps are you using? they shouldn't leave red marks. try doing them up looser

Belo · 12/01/2006 20:28

No, haven't got any boosters. Back onto ebay... I've got motherease wraps. I've only got 2 though so I need to buy a couple more. Which ones are the best to get?

i use the motherease airflow wraps (that popper up the side)... fabtastic!

boosters aren't very expensive new tbh... snap-in boosters

starlover · 12/01/2006 20:30

i use the stay dry ones... taht way you don't need a fleece liner as well

julienetmum · 12/01/2006 22:29

I love motherease but have to admit to using Tots Bots during the night. I find the airflow wraps are the best.

sunnydelight · 13/01/2006 14:25

I used motherease with DD for 2 1/2 years and loved them, but any time I ever tried them at night I ended up having to change pjs/grobag/sheets (regardless of boosters) so decided it wasn't worth it. Not the real nappy way I know, but I reckoned one disposable per night was better than all disposables.

MrsCurly · 13/01/2006 21:15

I used motherease for two years and found them fantastic. Second the advice about the snap in booster - I always used one at night, and only very very rarely had any problems. If you have any trouble getting hold of some CAT me.

On the wraps front, I would check you have the right size - they come in small, medium, large and extra large.

MrsMiggins · 13/01/2006 21:23

ditto sunnydelight

tinytotmummy · 13/01/2006 21:27

Definately try a booster - you can get stay dry ones to snap in, and perhaps a larger wrap. Motherease are very good, and lots of people use them, but they're not for everyone. Perhaps you could try a large pocket nappy, like a minki or nature babies stuffable, that you can "stuff" with inserts, terrry cloth, or whatever absorbant material you like and adjust it to suit your babies requirements. Have a look at babykind's site , they have lots of useful information on using real nappies and the pros and cons of different types and brands.

alicemama · 13/01/2006 21:47

I love my meos n my 7 week old but the past week or so I put her in a minki at night as she was a bit soggy come morning.
I stuff my minki's with a hemp insert and that lasts her all night....plus the designs are so cute!

have a look www.nappiesbyminki.wahmall.co.uk/traderplus/index.php

Belo · 13/01/2006 22:06

Thanks for all the advice. I've ordered some snap in inserts from the kittykins website.

I've stalled on ordering the wraps front as I can't make up my mind. Has anybody got any experience of the totsbots ones? I'm easily led astray by a pretty cover....

Tots fleece are excellent for night time as long as they are properly boosted but I needed to go up a size to do this. The regular Tots wraps don't really go over MEOS and I found they wicked badly, tho they are very gentle.

I do somethimes get red marks with ME velcro wraps (Rikki) but the popper ones are fine cos you can do them up quite loose at the legs and they never leak.

I also found that the ME fabric feels wetter than most, Tots and OneLife both seem to keep the wee in one place IYSWIM, also Bumbles are a good choice, esp. at night (they have a fleece lining and can be stuffed)

NannyL · 14/01/2006 16:25

i agree wuth others.... you need to boost these nappies. even if you just use a normal microfibre cloth from tesco (2 for 99p ish i think!)

you can put them between the nappy and the wrap, doesnt have to be 'in' the nappy IUSWIM

also have you seen other nappies compared to MEOS?

having seen (and mostly used) other nappies i cant believ MEOS work at all at night (tho obv peopl swaer they do!)

why not get a couple of tots / tots bamboozles for night time, or a nappy with a bit more to it like ME sandys (which i LOVE) or kissaluvs (another of my favs!)

dont forget you CAN boost those aswell

even things like old flannels / cut up towels will do to boost! doesnt need to be expensive!

Skyler · 14/01/2006 17:14

Wool wraps can be nice for overnight as they are breathable. Although they are expensive initially they only need washing and relanolising about once a month (yes really) as the wool is self cleaning. You air the wrap each day and only need to wash it if it still smells. They work like the fleece in a way but are a natural fibre which I prefer when possible. Other than that I swear by Motherease Airflow wraps. I found the Tots Bots wicked.
My dd1 used to look like a weeble when she was ready for bed and eventually I had to give up on the night nappy as she was such a heavy wetter. We had Ellas house bumhuggers (hemp nappies) boosted twice with four layer boosters folded in half! and then a wool wrap over the top. The wool wrap really made a difference.
Having used the ME onesize I can't imagine them lasting long without the snap in booster.
HTH

Skyler · 14/01/2006 17:16

That should read I gave up on the cloth night nappy, and used a disposable so that we could do up her sleepsuits again.

tinytotmummy · 14/01/2006 22:41

Skyler, LOL at the weeble look! Minki Huggles are also good for overnight, they have an attached booster inside, but you can also boost as neccesary. I also like nappy nation no fold shaped terry and their wraps. You'll need a size larger wrap than the nappy, IYSWIM.

madmel · 15/01/2006 21:47

I would say that a MEOS would need boosting anyway at night, and generally with more than one snap in booster. I agree with the PP about microfibre cloths, just make sure they are not next to your DD's skin.

Sometimes red marks on legs can be a reaction to washing powder. I would suggest adding a tablespoon of white vinegar to your final rinse, which will help get rid of any washing powder residue.

As far as wraps are concerned, ME Rikki or Airflow are both really good wraps, but you could try OneLife too.

maisiemog · 16/01/2006 23:49

I agree it is often better to have a day nappy and a night nappy, and for most babies over 6 months MEOs are day nappies and tots/huggles/minkis etc are better for nights.
The binding on Motherease wraps can cause a reaction, I have read a number of threads where this has been the case. Probably best to try another wrap. Wool is good at night and doesn't need washing that often, just aired.
Poochies wraps are poppered and very gentle on the legs, they run big and a medium can last until 25lbs. Cotton Bottoms wraps are available from BigW and Boots, and are very good as well with soft leg bindings, they run small though, so if in doubt go up a size.
Hope you get it all sorted soon
