how to get a baby to drink...

My DD is about to turn 12months and I've been trying everything to get her to drink water since she was 6 months - she is just not getting it!!

I've tried the sippy cup, doidy and straw cups . She will sip water from the sippy or doidy, but not very often. She can't figure out how to use the straw.

She went through a phase of trying to use the sippy cup herself but couldn't figure out to tip it back and used to cry with frustration if u tried to help her.

Then for the past few days its like she's took a step back and she's been turning her head most of the times I offer it to her.

Any ideas??

I used to make a big jokey deal of taking a big gulp of water, and then at the end of my gulp sort of smack my lips (difficult to describe!) and theatrically go 'aaaaahhhhhh'. I would then offer my glass (an ordinary adult glass) to DS.

My DS loved it, found it funny, and started to try to copy me. He would take a big gulp and then laugh. I would be on cloud nine as my DS had taken a big gulp whilst thinking it was part of play.

At 16 months, I still occasionally do it if I am worried about lack of fluids in summer time, and it works a treat!

Dd would only drink from a cup like this and nothing else from about 8 months. She still prefers it at 22 months

Thanks both of you. I have had some success today with a cup like hazchem described, and have also been having a drink myself and going mmm. Not sure if the novelty of the new cup will wear off tomorrow (she has only been sipping from it!), so will also order one of those knittingnovice to add to my growing baby cup collection.

Good luck timeoutofmind I have over 20 baby cups which ds at 3.6 has suddenly decided he wants to use as opposed to the beakers he has been using for over a year!!!!

My DS was never a great drinker. He loved his bottles but simply would not drink any other fluid-this resulted in him becoming very constipated and on advice of my HV we started to try out different juices (well watered down obviously) eventually we stumbled upon a brand he likes and he now drinks v well and has no constipation. Perhaps you could try very watered down juice to see how that goes down - I would rather have this combined with good teeth brushing than a non-drinking baby again! HTH
