So does nursing through nite do the same? and is dummy therefore replacement of this? If so does this then lens itself to cosleeping. Just pondering as in bed nursing dd

I asked my hv about this ages ago and iirc she said that cosleeping/nursing through the night had the same effect.

A dummy works because they are sucking as they would a nipple if co-sleeping

Show - that's interesting (and confirmed my theory) as was thinking "do I need to but her dummy's" but then thought of cheaper and easier lazier option

A dummy works because the reflex of sucking prevents them from falling into a deep sleep - the risk of SIDS is higher when babies are in a deep sleep because essentially they 'forget' to breathe . Sucking a dummy and co sleeping keeps them in a lighter sleep therefore reduces the risk . Basically WHO tell us that co sleeping is dangerous because of the reckless parents that drink or take drugs and then suffocate their baby .

Sullyoldelf - I often pop dd into cot right next to bed as have ds2 in bed as well and tho I'm between them I don't want to risk him squishing her. She's been sleeping for long stretches like 11/12 till 7/8. Does that mean she's sleeping deeply and therefore at risk. She's almost 9 weeks, tho on 91st centile and ebf. Paranoid here

awen your LO is on the 91st centile , so she can take bigger feeds ,which is lucky for you as it means she has a full tummy for longer ,and so she can sleep for longer periods . I don't think it means she is necessarily in a deeper sleep just that her tummy is content ! And if the cot is right next to your bed then the sounds of other people in the room are likely to keep her in lighter sleep anyway .
