Baby-carseat time

So I have been taking as gospel that a baby shouldn't stay in a car seat for longer than 2 hours, and don't find it difficult to understand why (breathing difficulties) or to stick to it.
What I can't find out is, up to what age/developmental milestone does this apply?
Does anybody know?

"Being in a semi-upright position for long periods may place a strain on your baby's developing spine." TBH its not a good position to stay in for a long time at any age, but I imagine when they can hold their own heads up their spine is better adapted to cope with it for a longer period of time.

Nope and I looked when my DD was newborn as well. Best I could find was that it was until the baby had good head control.... but can't remember where I read that sorry :(

x-post. Oh and there also is the flat-head thing if they are in car seats frequently and for a long time.

I think if you need to travel a long way etc it's not a problem for them to be in the seat for longer periods of time, its more as a precaution so that they are not in there for a long time on a regular basis.

I travel about 6 hours to my folks in Cornwall about 4 times a year and my dd has slept all the way. Apart from over heating in the summer she is absolutely fine.
