Would I be mean if I didn't buy a present for my baby?

I know I wouldn't be mean but I have to ask the question as I'm not sure if I should as it's his first Christmas. He is 4 months old and to be fair, doesn't need anything. My work mate thinks I'm being mean by not getting him anything. Is he right? Did anyone buy their babies anything for the first Christmas?

Not mean at all - it's your choice and your DS won't know any different. If you feel you would like to buy him a token something it might be nice to buy one thing that he could keep as he grows up. I got both my girls a toy Rudolph for their first Christmas plus a few other bits that I would have bought anyway eg baby wetsuit for swimming etc

We didn't for DD. She was only 6 weeks, didn't need anything she didn't have and got lots of things from other people. We just bought her toys later on when she needed them.

DD is DC4. The others have a mound of presents. She has a book and something that Tesco sent us for free with a large direct order.
She will be 5 months Christmas.

I won't be buying for my 15wo.

Sibling4 · 16/12/2011 22:05

My 4 month old isn't having anything. She doesn't have hobbies or interests and has 10034 handed down toys to ignore already

I also have a four month old and have bought 6-9month old clothes and a couple of new sleeping bags to be wrapped as 'presents'. I wanted to mark LO's first Christmas, but didn't want to waste money on things we didn't need; they are all things I'd have bought anyway except the cute but very overpriced top that's almost identical to one his dad has

Last year we got DS some classic childrens books and wrote in them, something along the lines of, "...on your 1st Christmas love Mummy & Daddy". He is only now interested in them but I thought it was a nice touch. Grin

Thanks for all the replies. I'm glad I'm not alone then and I'm not feeling mean as my friend suggested. I might buy him some bigger clothes as I'm sure he'll need them very soon going by the rate he's growing! X

Not mean! I got DS a jumperoo though in the sales :)

We didn't buy for our 1 year old. I wouldn't buy for him this year (just turning 2) but DH wanted to give him a present. Even now he doesn't know any different.

I have friends who don't buy any of their 4 children Christmas presents as they get so many from doting family members and they'd otherwise be drowning in clutter.

ThreeNine · 17/12/2011 11:42

I wasn't going to get anything for our 9 week old, but I felt a bit weird about it so ended up getting her a £6 toy from the ELC. I now feel silly for getting it though Grin I know she'll get loads from family and probably has way more than she needs anyway.

Don't feel mean! I don't remember getting our DD (who was 4 mo) anything last Christmas - we were buying her things she needed all the time as it was, and besides, she was (still is) far too young to understand Christmas anyway! Now that she is 16mo, we've got her a few new books - it's the rest of the family that are going bananas. I dread to think what pressure there'll be next year!
