Think back to your own childhood. What reminds you particularly of Christmas? It's amazing what ends up being 'special' :)

We don't do it any more but, in the past, the visit to a really proper Santa at the local garden centre got the ball rolling. Then I'd take the afternoon off to dress the tree and string up the outdoor lights whilst DS was out at school so that it was all lit up when he came home... that was nice. Now he's older he helps me decorate the tree and we reward ourselves with lavish amounts of hot chocolate. The Then there are the 'once a year' things like having a special stocking, leaving the mince-pie for Santa and a carrot for Rudolph on the night. We've had lots of fun inventing accidental personal 'traditions' like watching the Muppet Christmas Carol (don't ask...) and making special Christmas biscuits for people. One year we even rehearsed a daft Christmas song (me on the ukulele, him singing) and wassailed our way through quite a few parties!!! We'll be taking a walk through town next week as they're having a Christmas market and the Sally Army will be belting out a few carols - very evocative.

Have fun

Some ideas..but how old is your DS?

make some edible Christmas gifts for family together
make some christmas decorations/cards together
watch a christmassy film together whilst eating something nice.
getting rugged up, go for a big walk, collect some ever green stuff to hang in the house, have a big hot chocolate with marshmallows, cream etc when you get home.
Visit Father Christmas
Go to a big city and look at the christmas lights, finish with a nice meal out (could be cheap and cheerful Pizza Hut or similar)
Let your child chose a new Christmas decoration from the shop each year
Buy/borrow a Christmas story and read it at bed time each night.
Go to a Panto.
Christmas Hampers on Christmas Eve- new PJs, bath bomb, book, DVD.

Start making any of the above your traditions that you do each year.
