What do you do when teat size 3 is not fast enough?

My DS is 8 months old. Size 3 teats are just not fast enough, he ends up just playing with it or biting it about half way through his bottle but will drink it if I squeeze the milk into his mouth.

He's either very lazy or gets bored with his bottle because it doesn't come out fast enough. I feel he is too young to be moved onto a beaker so is there any faster flowing teats out there?

I'd try a beaker.
DS had problems with bottles (not a flow thing) and his paediatrician suggested trying a beaker or just using an egg cup for him to sip from - he was around the same age.

I guess I could. He downs his water which is in a beaker so at least he has experience of one!

Thanks, I've just never known of or seen a child under 1 drink milk from anything else other than a bottle.

DD went onto beakers well before one. She had water from a beaker from 6 months so it just seemed like the right thing to do to move her onto a beaker for milk too. A free flow beaker would probably be best for a fast drinker.

Avent do variflow teats which are pretty fast as it's a slit rather than a hole. Might be worth a try if you don't want to use a beaker yet.

Avent do 4 teats. Vary flow ones are good too, but better with thicker liquids.

When size 3 was too slow, I just started using size 4 teats. Do they still make them (my 'baby' is almost 6 now so a bit out of touch Smile)

TheLaineyWayIsEssex · 10/12/2011 21:36

Am genuinely confused how a size 3 can be too slow. My ds 12 mo still uses newborn/slow flow on most of his bottles.
Could your ds just be teething or not that fussed? When my ds was cutting his first teeth, he chewed on the bottle a lot and didn't drink a lot, as it hurt to suck.
If you are squeezing the milk into his mouth he doesn't have a choice but to swallow it really?

my 7 month old gets v frustrated with size 3 teats, she has size 4 and vari flow.

breatheslowly · 10/12/2011 21:41

You can always put an extra hole in your current teats. As far as I could tell size 1 had 1 hole, size 2 had 2 holes etc.

CaffeineIsMyBestFriend · 10/12/2011 22:41

Ah, I use Tommee Tippee... that may be where I am going wrong :o

Lainey... all babies are different, obviously your DC is quite content with size 1's. Mine on the other hand is most certainly not content with his. And when I squeeze it into his mouth, if he doesn't want any more, he simply spits it out. Thats when I stop. I don't force my child to drink milk if he doesn't want to.

Are the Avent ones age specific as well as sized? Like, TT's size 3 are 6m+? So are size 4 say, 9m or 12m+?

Mam do X teats - or we just pushed the tip of a knife in some of our older teats to make the hole bigger.... worked fine for us!

fairimum · 10/12/2011 22:45

we had to do this early on as DD had reflux so had either gaviscon/comfortmilk/or prescribed thickened milk from quite early on!

CaffeineIsMyBestFriend · 10/12/2011 22:46

fairimum, thank you! I might give it a go with the knife tomorrow! If I ruin it, I'll just go and have a look at other teats and bottles :)

Tommee Tippee do variflow teats, I used to use them with DD.

Sloobreeus · 10/12/2011 22:50

Sterilise a needle and make another hole or make the existing one bigger?

CaffeineIsMyBestFriend · 10/12/2011 22:57

I'm evidently not that clued up with teats! So, variflow is..? Can they be faster flowing than size 3's?

With a cross in the end instead of a hole. The harder the baby sucks, the quicker the milk comes out. Smile.

Same price as the usual teats, I used to buy them from boots or asda so I should imagine they would be widely available.
