Camping with a new baby

Hi,

I'm due with our first baby end of Feb and have a friends wedding in France early June. We're considering camping for 2 nights-we have a really big tent and there will be lots of friends to help us out during the days.

Does anyone have any experience of camping with young babies? Any tips? Or would it be completely impractical to camp so young?

Any thoughts/experiences appreciated! x

oh no it's easy camping with a little baby! esp if you're breastfeeding (no making up bottles at night in cold tent!)

I took dd2 when she was about the same age and it was very easy. At that age they are still sleeping loads during the day and will usually sleep anywhere, so camping is completely possible - in fact quite a lot easier and more relaxing than camping with older babies or toddlers. Go for it!

Agree it's far easier than with potty training toddlers

You'll be fine. Even if you're formula feeding, though bf obviously MUCH easier. You can buy Milton sterilising tab thingys for bottles, I used to boil water just before bed, then put in insulated bag, then insulated bag inside mini coolbox, kept water usably hot for about 4-5 hours.

If you have a large tent a travel cot is handy as baby can go in that whilst you put tent up and down as well as sleep in it.

I'd recommend one of those waterproof picnic blankets too.

And a good torch.

Enjoy!

Thanks for the tips! Definitely considering it now Smile x

We camp quite often so have good torches, head torches etc. Will plan on taking a travel cot-I find it hard enough sleeping in my sleeping bag as it is let alone with a baby in there! Hoping I will be breast feeding but if I need to take the steriliser it's a good excuse to get an electric hook up and have somewhere to plug my straighteners in!! I camp often, but still find if hard to get back to nature completely Wink x

As long as the weather is fine it's no problem. We tried camping in a few places in the summer but campsite 1 was over 100F in the day and sand pitches meant the tent couldn't stand a storm when it hit and campsite 2 got down to 2oC at night, from 26oC in the day. DD was 18 months.

Was fun in hindsight though Grin

We didn't bother with campsite 3 and just checked into a motel

i tried the travel cot thing (have never co-slept) but in the end, put the toddler back into the travel cot (much to her disgust) and co-slept with the baby. trying to negotiate endless night waking with air beds and travel cots in the quiet of a camp site did my head in. so i would suggest changing your 'normal' sleeping arrangements (or at least planning to) and maybe packing a duvet over the top of all your camping gear to use instead of a sleeping bag in the last resort. it totally saved my sanity.

and the baby was fine going back into the cot when we got home. the different surroundings just meant that he was unable to settle in the travel cot at night in the tent.

was bf though, so can't comment about electrical requirements!

I took DS camping at 5 weeks old! Was really easy. Milton (and other cold steri fluids) can be used without the need to rinse, and the single use cartons are a godesend if you aren't BF - pull bottle out of steriliser, put carton in bottle, feed! No mixing or faffing with powder. It is a bit more expensive, but if you're only going for 2 days, it isn't prohibitive. Have fun!
