What to buy DS for his first Christmas?

Just wanting to steal ideas please! DS will be 9 months at Christmas and we're struggling for ideas on what to get him. He'll no doubt be spoilt rotten by friends and relatives and has everything he needs. DH and I fancy getting him something meaningful that's not another plastic toy. He hasn't been christened so doesn't have all the engraved silver stuff, not that we're particularly into that anyway.

We just want something that he'll know was for his first Christmas. We don't want to spend a lot.

Any ideas?

What about a nice rocking horse? It will entertain him for a couple of years then can be passed on to his children?

You could sponsor a child for him, something he can take on when he is big enough?

An ISA?

my friend had a lovely idea (which I might steal) to get her little girl a really nice santa sack this year and from then on, every year (when she actually knows whats going on) her presents will be in it. If you are at all crafty you could sew things onto it every year or put her name on it or something. Its something she could keep into adulthood if its good enough quality.

How about a nice copy of a classic children's book that you can read to him in the future, an old favourite of yours or DH's perhaps? Could write a 'first Christmas' inscription on the inside.

My ds will be 8 months at Christmas, we've got him a good quality soft toy orangutan, a bit different to the usual cuddly baby toys, and hope it will be one he can keep for a long time. Also we have got him some plastic rubbish toys, but he isn't going to get inundated with those from others so was quite fun to get some things he will actually play with on the day.

first christmas, he was 11 m onths and got him one of those plastic tool set things - just a hammer and things you could hammer in and out basically... he loved it!!!!

Some lovely ideas - thanks! My mum also suggested a Christmas decoration that we'll get out every year so I've ordered a personalised tree bauble type thing and will look into your ideas for something to go with it. Smile

Some lovely ideas here. I'm a sentimental sort so I'm going to do the bauble and santa sack / stocking ideas. In fact I'm thinking a bauble a year, to be kept in said sack, and she can (sob) leave home with them in 20 years time, or 40, or whatever is normal by then... For her in the here and now, I'm going hideous octopus shaped rattle, which will be more what she (DD 6 months at Xmas) actually likes!

excellent - I shall be doing similar!

Both of mind had clothes for their first christmas.. or stuff they needed. I seem to remember DS getting a bath seat Blush

They are more interested in the wrapping paper whatever you buy :)

trixie123 - a sack is a brilliant idea, which I had thought of that. Last Christmas DD was almost 5 months old and I don't think we got her anything Blush our reasoning was that we buy her stuff all the time. We had bought a play gym thing in November, and didn't see the point of waiting until Christmas to get it out.

This year we have asked grandparents etc for some toys that will last a few years, and we've bought her some nice books and a cuddly Elmer. She loves books, and they will definitely last.

DD will be 8 months at Christmas and we are getting her a stair gate or playpen. We need to get them soon anyway as it won't be long before she will be moving, and she will like the big box and lots of wrapping paper. She doesn't need any more clothes or toys though I have bought her a new dress to wear on the day and FC will bring her a small toy and book. I have also got her a bauble for the tree. My mum orgamised a group of relatives to get together and buy her a Jumperoo. She has had it about a month already, as we thought it best if she gets more use out of it rather than waiting until Christmas. She absolutely loves it.

hi!
ds2 will be 5 months abd we are getting him all the different bits for a treasure box and wrapping then up. We have asked friends and family to buy/ find one or two things as well. Pretty cheap. Google 'baby treasure box' for info and ideas.

stottiecake · 02/12/2011 22:25

or 'heuristic play treasure box' might be a better google.
