When your child is ill in the winter, do you leave them without a duvet at night?

DC3 has been ill this week and quite hot at night. I haven't wanted to have DC under duvets and blankets with a high temperature, but feel a bit mean when I've been just using a sheet/light blanket as there has been moaning about being cold. What do you do when it is cold outside (and inside)?

When DS was small, we used to shove the duvet to the side of the bed so he could wriggle under as much or as little of it as he wanted, depending on current temperature, and give him a light blanket or an empty quilt cover for the rest of him. That seemed to give plenty of options!

Thanks AMum - the problem is that when he is really hot and feverish he actually feels cold and is so more likely to go under the duvet and end up even hotter. I'm worried he will overheat while I'm asleep.

How old is he? Mostly, people will wriggle out from the covers if they are getting too hot.

I have DD in with me, on top of the duvet with a light blanket if she is feverish, because I worry about overheating. When she is next to me then I reckon my body temp maybe helps regulate hers a bit, plus if she feels really hot then I can react quickly.

I do the same Cinnamon - he's on top of my duvet and DH gets kicked out!

He's five - but I know when I am feverish I like duvets/hot water bottles/blankets and so does he. Fine in an adult, but I'm always a bit worried about overheating in a child.

I let mine have their duvet but wear less nightwear e.g. just pj shorts or pants rather than the full outfit

Ds3 had high temp all last night. He was in bed with me, under duvet, but just wearing short sleeved t shirt.

You need to keep them lightly covered with layers so you can remove or add depending on how they feel when the temp goes up and down.

What you want to avoid is getting too cold or the shivering stage will cause a very quick drop in temp which is not good.

I would keep light cotton vest and pants on for a mild grade fever. You only start stripping off at a spike...

I still have a baby cotton cellular blanket for my 4 and 6 year old dss and use it with a cotton sheet when they have a temp. I can tuck it under the mattress and they stay covered but not overheating.
