How do you bath a little one when you have a bad back/painful knees?

I love my over-the-bath bath. But ds is going to be too big for it soon. The thought of hanging over the side of the bath again doesn't fill me with joy - ouch. Any suggestions?

Would a little seat to sit on - one of those horrid little plastic steps that are so very useful around the house (mine was my birthing stool) be helpful?

Don't know how old your ds is but could he have a bath with you - would there be someone around to help?

Do you have a big kitchen sink? I have recurring back problems and have found using the kitchen sink to be a godsend.
It's very retro!

He is five months Mercy and that's deffo a possibility - hadn't thought of that! Will have to fight the dds for the privelege though

I've got a bad back, it' just a case of grinning and bearing it and getting in the bath with them if its really bad to be honest

OR, actually, what about a large bowl/wossname of some sort, you know, a container of appropriately bath-like tendencies, filled with a hose or one of those shower elephant's trunk things from the tap?

Miaou · 05/01/2006 22:13

Just a poxy little sink I'm afraid meggymoo (what happened to your Y btw?} - smaller than my over-the-bath thingy.

It's the leaning down and supporting bit that causes me probs - far worse if I am pg too.

DH has a bad back, and knees, and folds up multiple towels to kneel on when bathing DD...but she's 2, so no support needed, just a wash and play. When she was 5 months, we had an inflatable duck some American friends left after a holiday here, which lifted DD up several inches from the bottom of the bath and was bigger than her baby-bath. (And it quacked ) DD loved it, and it did help our backs by being a good support for her and a bit higher than just a bath.

Have you thought about a tummy tub? It's basically a non-skid bucket that baby sits in. I found it really helpful as you can use it anywhere, and DS didn't seem to get as distressed in it as he did when we tried him in the Big Bath.

Because it's a bucket you can just plonk it on any surface - floor, table, chair - to suit your back.
