help! I keep getting static shocks when I'm out shopping with pushchair. Every time I press the button to call a lift I get a static shock! I actually saw a blue spark today. I look like a total loon each time I press the button or touch anything metal for that matter. Does anyone have a solution! :)

hi i get this sometimes and used to all the time at a shop I used to work in. The wheels of the trolleys over carpet would work up a charge and then when you touch the metal lift button it shocks. I don't know if you can do anything to stop the charge building up but just put a sleeve over your finger when you push the button

Yes, I get this and I look completely OCD when I push lift buttons as I do a tentative jabbing motion at them with my knuckle to try and avoid the shock...

ha ha Rhinestone that is exactly what I look like :) I think I need to wear something on my lift button poking finger like you say trixie!

Try holding the metal part of the pushchair frame down below the handle if you are in a shop where you know this is a problem, instead of the insulated handle. I found this helped. I still do it with my shopping trolley now in the clothing area of Tesco as I get shocks there the same too.

I get this all the time, even without a buggy!

Often when I get out of the car, or even in tesco with a trolley. I gave dh a huge shock in JohnLewis perfume dept once, I had sprayed on something, held my wrist to his face for him to sniff the gorgeousness, and I saw a two inch blue spark jump from my wrist to his chin! I am sure the woman behind the counter thought I had hit him!

As already said you are building up a static charge and when you touch metal you are suddenly earthed, hence the shock.

Try and keep a hold of a metal bit of the buggy or trolley, and for cars either push the window to close the door or try to get out of the car, making sure you touch metal BEFORE you touch the ground.

I wonder if it is certain shoes that make it worse, but have never managed to make a definitive conclusion!

Also when dd was small we used to run about and touch ds1 or dh to pass it on and laugh hysterically at their literally shocked expressions :D :D

I found I got it when I was wearing rubber soled shoes, like trainers. The charge builds up and doesn't discharge. I don't get it when I'm wearing boots.

it's driving me mad now! Gave some poor woman a shock when I accidentally bumped into her in the lift, that was through layers of clothing too! Thanks for suggestions will give them a go!

I had this with a wheelchair I was using with a patient. It kept building up charge & giving out painful shocks to me and the patient. Other chairs from same company - no problem.
I phoned them feeling silly, but they said it wasnt that uncommon and came to fix a little earthing device on it.
