Anyone got one of these? Do u rate it? It says in the product description that the alarm sounds if baby doesnt move for 20 seconds. Presumably breathing counts as moving? Xx

Hello!

We've noticed this thread is quite old and some of the suggestions are a little out of date. We've spent weeks speaking to parents and testing out baby monitors.

Read reviews of the overall best baby monitor as well as the best sensor pad and video monitors to see which ones came out on top.

Hope that helps! Flowers MNHQ

It is reviewed in the review section here www.mumsnet.com/Reviews/baby-monitors/82-angelcare-ac401

I have one. Yes, breathing counts as movement - although you can turn that off and just have the audio if you want.

Only issue we found was that when DS was little and starting moving about the cot, he'd occasionally get right to the top, turn 90 degrees and set the alarm off. We ended up moving the pad slightly and it seemed to work.

I still think it's brilliant and seemed to help me with my paranoid tendency to poke DS every five seconds to check he was still breathing. Now he snores... Grin

We got the babysense II monitor. I had really bad post-natal anxiety and wouldn't have slept a wink without it. It has a flashing light that shows your DC is breathing so you don't need to keep prodding, and a really loud alarm which frightened the bejesus out of us at 2am one morning - all was well thankfully, I think he just moved off the pad - which is why it comes with 2 sensor pads to cover the whole of the cot when they start moving about. We only put ours away when DS moved to his bed at 2.5 Blush
I know some will say, it will only feed your anxiety, but I can say that it's the best £150 I've spent.

I really rate this monitor but that's because I'm super, super paranoid about cot death and this actually helps me sleep! I admit its probably totally over the top (and I was laughed at by the nurses in SCBU when i admitted I had one) but to me, the peace of mind is priceless and I don't care! I couldn't get to the review and it probably says this there but the 20 second thing is because it can be normal for babies to not breathe for 10 secs or so when they are little. It doesn't do anything flash like the other monitors eg 2 way sound, play lullabies etc but I didn't feel I needed that anyway. The only drawback is I keep forgetting to turn it off when I pick up the baby and setting the alarm off!

I got one after DS had very bad bronchiolitis at 8 weeks old, without it I doubt I would have ever slept!

Traceymac2 · 21/11/2011 21:43

I used mine for both of my children, it's still linked up in my 18 months old room now! It was fantastic for when they both came home from the hospital. I didn't use it for the first couple of nights with dd1 as she was in a Moses basket and it wouldn't have been too comfortable under her matress, instead I slept with my glasses on so I could immediately see her on waking! I was that nervous or crazy! It llowed me to sleep with the knowledge that they were ok. They are brilliant in my opinion.

jaggythistle · 21/11/2011 21:50

i like mine too, also i can recommend Angelcare customer service. our parent unit display stopped working after about 18 months and they sent us a brand new one free of charge!

i am a total worry pants and it has made me feel a lot better to see the little pendulum silently ticking away if i wake up.

in no way am i still using it for my 2.2 year old Grin
(don't worry, he's getting a bed for Christmas so we can save the angelcare for dc2 due next year...)

headfairy · 21/11/2011 21:55

I bought an Angelcare for ds as I was paranoid about cot death, but to be honest I turned off the movement sensor after two nights of ds being in his own room as it went off twice (he'd moved off the pad) and the shock of waking to hear the alarm going off was so dreadful I couldn't bear it. Obviously the alternative is too awful to contemplate, but our risk was pretty low for SIDS. I compensated by giving ds a dummy (which 4 years later I'm still trying to persuade him to part with grrrrr!)

CatL · 22/11/2011 14:09

We have this and got on really well with it. We did stop using the movement sensor when DD was about 18 months, maybe a bit younger, as at that time she kept wriggling right to the end of the cot bed and it wouls go off occasionally, but only when she got really far and slept with ehr weight on the headboard. Hardly ever a false alarm til then (apart from, like MrsDobalina, when one of us would take her out and not switch it off!). Definitely stopped me obsessively going in to check on her and waking her up! We also used it jsut with the sensor, not the sound, when she was in a moses basket in our room in the first few months - again great for stopping me looking to check if she was breathign all the time! It;s good that it is flexible to use as movement, sound or both, and you can also set an alarm for temperature if you want. I didn;lt find the false alarms panicked me too much, as once you've had one you kind of assume it is a false alarm, andjsut go in to check, just in case, rather than rushgin in panic stricken!

SandyChick · 22/11/2011 16:54

We had it with ds1 who is now 4 and will be buying the new version for ds2.

A friend had a tommee tippee version that was always alarming if baby moved to the end of the cot. Ours only went of maybe 2 or 3 times the whole time we used it. We used a sheet of plywood across the lats of the cot as recommended in the manual so that the sensor pad was flat under the mattress.

The new version has the baby's room temp on the parent monitor which is much better than our old one which was on the baby's monitor so the display illuminated the baby's room!

Feenie · 22/11/2011 16:56

We used this, and now ds is 6 we still use the monitor bit when he is poorly! It is still going strong. The sensor pad is excellent.

attheendoftheday · 22/11/2011 19:28

We have one, but have never used the pressure sensor. I like it, it is easy to use, it monitors the temperature of the room and if there's a power cut it switches to battery mode automatically. I wouldn't pay full price, though. We got ours for £40 on ebay (it was new and boxed).

moaninlisa · 22/11/2011 20:10

Loved it and my DS was on it until 3 years of age.
