Which double pushchair do I need?!

Boring, I know, but we have been through about a million pushchairs with DD, so I don't trust myself to make this decision. DD will be 2.5 when baby is born, and she only (daytime) sleeps in the pushchair, so I need something she can still lie down in. I think the older child can't lie down in a Phil and Teds if there's a baby in there. Is this right? Anyway everyone on Mumsnet seems to hate Phil and Ted... I do a tonne of walking and am tall, so would like something comfy to push, and would prefer not to spend too much since DD won't be in it for THAT long (do really need it for those snoozes, though!). Is there an answer to my prayers?!

Baby jogger Classic will do all that for you. I love mine. It's a dream to push, fully reclinable for newborn (although I did put in an inesert), great shades, great storage, turns on a penny. It's the only place DD who is now 3.10 ever sleeps during the day (she goes in it in the school run someties). DS aways sleeps really well in it too.

My two are exactly the same age. I managed to get a maclaren double buggy second hand from our NCT nearly new sale. It is fab as there are two baskets for stuff and both sides can be laid down independently. It also folds down easily to fit into the boot. My two love sitting side by side. My only negative is that mine is a tad heavy to lift in and out of car but once up is very sturdy - might be it's age though as it is an older version. Go and try a few and see what you think. I have found it invaluable though Smile

Mine are the same age gap too, just for the record!

I love the Phil n Teds, i bought one from ebay and have had so much use out of it. My older one slept in it loads, although it doesn't lie flat.

madwomanintheattic · 18/11/2011 20:25

i bet by the time you get her in it, she'll have stopped her naps. Grin

the only double buggy i bothered to use (mine are exactly 24mos apart for the first two, and 18 mos between the second two) was a chariot carriers one that converted to a cycle trailer. it was reasonably rare to have two children in it, and the toddler of the time usually walked.

i did buy an in line, and it was frankly ridiculous. i didn't use it at all and i sold it the following week.

i carried the tinies in a carrier for ages anyway, so used just a single buggy for that period.

Mountain Buggy Terrain (lighter than the Urban). Fab to push and you can pick second hand ones up cheaply.

My 4 year old could happily sleep in it and it reclined well for the baby too.

(I have tried double Maclarens and Phil and Teds but loathe them - they made my shoulders ache!)

Flower the p+t is the ONLY place DS will now nap in at 2.5 Grin. It doesn't recline flat but it looks pretty comfy.

i second the p n t - have a sport but would consider the vibe maybe as it looks a bit better ! Have 2 yr age gap - both mine sleep in it - and my eldest ds is a rubbish sleeper! ages 4 and 2 -

Pal of mine has a new one - i m unsure the name (possobly jogger) - but it s loooong and you can have a pram bit and a seat bit on it - i was out in shopping cnetre w her recently - it was a nightmare getting around the aisles in shops, then walking along footpaths etc - bloody heck she spent nearly a grand on it and plans on selling it and getting a P n T next week.
I really think though that you ve got to go try a few push em around the shop see if you can get in around the rails and aisles, see if you can get it in and out of the car easily (as in when a toddler would be trying to climb out of the car seat and baby crying) and do you need th basket underneath etc - what kind of terrain do you need it for,
for us i find ds uses his scooter a lot so it s handy having it as a single then pop on the double when needed, I also do my shopping a lot - fit s lots underneath.
Only thing I would say is the rain cover is annoying to get on and off - but it definately keeps them both dry - incidnetly I live int the city and dont have the car dring the week as Dh drives to work. So I m on public transport a lot w it. it s really a great buggy

Britax B Dual! Very easy to fold/unfold as it just pops up/down, both seats lie flat and face either way yet its compact and not too wide/long, lots of bits to adapt it with (carrycot travel system, single or both seats on etc) Light to push, looks more expensive than it is. Had ours a week, used daily, love it. Most reviews are v positive on the net too

I am very confused by the P+T. Maybe I am an idiot. But it looks like when there is a baby lying flat the toddler needs to sit very upright. And there are so many attachments and things that it has addled my feeble brain. The only trouble with side by side ones is that they wouldn't fit through the front door... And I guess you have to get rid once the toddler is walking all the time, which you wouldn't with a P+T. But I am still very confused...

I have a P&T Sport (had it for DS1 and DS2 and now using it for DS2 and DD). It is very very simple to put the second seat on (and I am an idiot about this kind of thing). DS2 naps in it very easily, even though the top seat doesn't recline when the baby is in (it does lean quite far back though - when we're pushing around, he usually sits bolt upright without his back touching the seat and only leans back to sleep).

The great thing about the P&T for me is how much babies LOVE to sleep in the carrycot bit. And it's easy to take it out while they're still sleeping - so when I come in after taking DS1 and DS2 to pre-school, I can bring a sleeping DD upstairs in her carrycot and she'll stay asleep for up to an hour while I do other things - wouldn't want to leave her out of sight in a normal pram for that. She takes most of her daytime naps around the house in it, and is very portable (though it does look like I've got her in a sports holdall which sometimes startles visitors).

I got my P&T second hand on ebay and it's still going strong (with a few new tyres after punctures) so they are hardy beasts.

When DD is 6-7 mths though, I'm going to move to using my Loola with a buggy board for DS2, as by then I don't think I will want him napping during the day.

Yes the baby lies flat and the toddler is on top- as far as I remember my toddler did sleep on top. Though I do remember changing it over to the double when dd ( baby ) was about 3-4 months - she had fairly good head control.

The cocoon thingy was brilliant as previous poster said.
