Are all children behind (age wise) in clothes if average weights?

Not that this is such a big deal, but just gets me wondering.

Whenever I take DS anywhere people naturally ask how old he is. When I reply he's just turned 2, or previously it was however many months, every, and I mean every time the other person will reply, gosh he's really big for his age isn't he? Of which I can never answer!

He's my only one so I don't have anyone to compare to. All I can go by is the fact that he's just a tiny bit over the averge line in those red books for height and right bang on the average line for weight (this was about 2 months ago).

But, in terms of clothing from shops, he's way behind. He's only just gone into 18-24 month clothes and 2-3 yrs, trousers especially are about 3 inches too long so doubt he'll be in them until well after christmas.

So, taking that into account I assumed he was probably more on the smaller side, so the comments came as quite a surprise. But now I wonder if these clothes are just made much bigger??

As I said previously, it's no big deal. He's rather healthy and looks in proportion so I'm not worried about it - more curious than anything and trying to figure out an answer next time someone tells me he's big. Do I just agree (which I have been doing after maybe stuttering a bit), or go by the red book and say he's about average or by the clothes and say actually he's small?

I find boys clothes are bigger than girls both in length and width. There must be an extra 3 inches in length and 4 in width on T shirts for example and trousers are 2 inches longer for for when comparing the same age group.

DD is just turned 6 and I buy age 9 tops, coats and dresses but age 7 trousers. DS is 10 and wears age 10 trousers and age 11-12 tops.

I just think sizes are weird and as a result don't shop for clothes for my DDs unless I can have them in my hand and check the fit. My DD1 is nearly 11 and has been in 11-12 trousers/jeans since the summer - except for her school trousers which are from M&S and are still too long. She's developing a figure, is very tall for her age and weight in proportion. She is in 12/13 tops because she has a long body and arms. I bought her an adult size 8 denim skirt for her because she wanted one that wasn't a mini, I had to dart it to take about 4in off the waist but the length was spot on what she wanted. She takes an adult size 4.5 shoe.

DD2 is nearly 9, has been in 9/10 clothes since she turned 8 but fits M&S and H&M stuff in that age range - it comes up longer in sleeves and body when buying tops and dresses. She's very tall, very slim and has a size 3.5 shoe. Her 9/10 jeans are perfect length for her now so she'll be out of them with one more growth spurt - thank goodness for 2 girls and hand me downs.

And don't get me started on Monsoon sizes - I bought the DDs a dress each for a family wedding and they had to have the biggest and 2nd biggest size respectively for the dresses not to be a mini. They must cater to a very petite market.

I have 3 dc and 2 of them are noticeably shorter than their peers - they are always at least a year out in the case of the oldest or at least 3-6 months in the case of the baby. The other one looks pretty average for his age - he is the only one I buy his actual age clothes for and they are slightly too big. I think children's clothes in the UK come up big.

DS1 is 7 he is 9-10 trousers for length and jumpers but the width looks silly!

DS2 is 5 he is in age 3-4 pants 4-5 trousers which are long enough but had to be taken in alot at the waist.
