Clothing brands for chunkier babies?

G1nger · 16/11/2011 21:04

My baby is 9 weeks old and is quite a little chunky monkey. He's exclusively BF, before you ask, and is on the very high percentiles for weight. His height is, however, fairly average (about 50th percentile). I've noticed that some clothes just don't fit him very well. For instance, the cardigan he was wearing today is for a 3-6 month baby (again - he's 9 weeks!) and is already looking a bit tight around the neckline. He doesn't need to diet (!) - he needs better fitting clothes. Anyone any ideas of what clothing brands (including perhaps international ones) are more generous around the chest/belly? Thanks :)

Frugi are generously sized. Avoid H&M and Gap.

Will watch this thread as I have a chunky monkey too! Grin

Internationally it may be worth looking at US. European are going to be tiny.

niamh29 · 16/11/2011 23:42

Don't worry, nobody will think he should go on a diet!

I think next are pretty generous on their sizes but can be quite long.

pumpkin patch were always quite good for DD. She was a "strapping lass" too.

Frugi and Polarn O Pyret are good. Both mine went from 25th centile at birth up to about the 90th. DD 2.5 is currently wearing 4 year old clothes and DS 11m has just started growing out of 12-18m clothes.

I wouldn't get hung up at all on the sizes clothes have on them - not only does it vary massively between brands but I really don't know where they get their sizes from - even when DS was on the 50th centile (briefly!) which presumably is plumb-average by definition, nothing in his age-range fitted.

Sounds like the bf-ing is going well, anyway - you should take it as a compliment when your DS is clearly thriving!

supermarket clothes can come up quite big eg asda?
get him tops with envelope neck like m&s tends to have, cos they stretch well if he has a big head. agree next is quite generous size

pigleychez · 17/11/2011 17:32

Ive discovered thats Asda and Next come up quite big. We have the opposite problem though as the DD's are skinny little rakes despite eating for England!
DD1 is 3 and still in 1-1.5 year old clothes!

DogStinkhorn · 17/11/2011 17:38

Tesco

Hersetta · 17/11/2011 20:19

I have found that M & S T shirts are the biggest. Trousers we tend to use Tesco and matalan which both seem to be generous. we had to move DS into 3-6 month clothes at 7-8 weeks as none of his T shirts fitted around his ample tummy and his trousers were digging in.

ChunkyMonkeyMother · 17/11/2011 20:25

My DS was 11lb 13oz so was a pretty chunky bugger! I found that Asda + Next were very well sized where Tesco used to be a little small in a strange way, as if there was enough material but it just didn't seem to be made properly!

We bought a lovely cardi from Mothercare which was like a chunky knit one, it was fab as it meant he could have top button undone if needed - Other than that maybe you could find a knitting stall/shop and get one tailor made?

Congrats on what sounds like a lovely cuddly snuggly bubba!

lukewarmmama · 17/11/2011 20:31

Sainsburys stuff was always massive (we had the opposite problem, the stuff kept falling down!)

Wolfiefan · 17/11/2011 20:37

Agree that nobody would criticise you for having a big bouncing bubba! My son was a mega chunker (now a very tall rake!) we found pumpkin patch fab. We also used tesco a lot, asda and next. (this time round find arms on next tops too skinny. Is my second child even chunkier I wonder?)

mum2JRC · 17/11/2011 21:33

My first son especially was quite a little michelin! He was average height and in the 90th percentile for weight. The rolls soon melt away once they get active.
I found at this age that Next and a lot of the supermarket clothes were well sized.

I used a lot of the gap long sleeved patterned/ logo vests at this age too. I found them quite long in the body so accommodated his ever expanding tummy!
Meant I just added some soft trousers and cardigan to give warmth.

BikeRunSki · 17/11/2011 21:38

Next, Asda, Tesco

MainlyMaynie · 18/11/2011 18:00

M and S are the best I find, followed by Tesco. Next really small in legs and arms - we can't get his hands through a lot of them! Sainsbury's similar to Next but without the arm problem. Boden seem to be designed for the tall and thin. John Lewis similar to Sainsbury's. But I see lots of people think differently, so it must depend on baby shape! DS is both tall (91st percentile) and chunky (98th percentile).

bridgeandbow · 18/11/2011 18:11

Tesco- is massive!

eversoslightlytired · 18/11/2011 21:32

My DD (now 8mo) is in some 12-18, has from 4 weeks old been between the 91st and 98th centile line. She is still b/f and has only just started on food recently. I call her my chubba chub!

I find that Tesco is the best and the clothes there are a generous size. Avoid Boots - their stuff is tiny!

gitinora · 18/11/2011 21:49

I find Tesco for boys small my ds is 11 months and i have to buy him 18-24 months from there. He is very long tho as well as a chunk so maybe thats why. Find next clothes are a good size.
Agree boots sizes are small and Gap.

Yuraye · 19/11/2011 12:53

Avoid mothercare. I've found they are very much on the small size and I have a chunky 15 weeker. Grin But that's only from experience of their vests and sleepsuits.

Wrigglebum · 20/11/2011 14:41

We're at the other end of the spectrum with a skinny boy and the brands he could never wear as they were too wide (hence should be great for you):

Next
Little Rocha at Debenhams
Pumpkin Patch
Asda

We find Gap, Tu at Sainsbo's, Primark and Tesco fit him well so maybe you should avoid those!

Ineedacleaneriamalazyslattern · 20/11/2011 14:57

DS2 is still chunky and usually wears Asda, Tesco and Next.
Agree Boots and Gap are neat fitting as is Sainsbury's.

Eclairwaldorf · 23/11/2011 18:12

M&s come up big too and roomy, good for basics and vests etc
