First Bed

I'm sure this has probably been asked and covered before, but I've had a quick look and couldn't find anything in the archives so here goes...
We would like to move DS from his cot to a bed, and are trying to decided which type of bed to get. Should we get an extendable one, a junior one or a normal single bed? (I think they're the only options available, but am probably wrong!)
What did you go for? Would you recommend it? Also, an indication of where you bought it and price would be good too if you don't mind.
Thanks, and happy new year!

we bought a bed from ikea, where both ends can be put flat when the child gets taller. it's been fine - v cheap, dd is now 4 and the ends are still in the up position, can't remember the price, but quite cheap. Think you can only get it in white now

I had a cot bed with DS1 so I could just put him in that. I think as long as it is low, they fall out sometimes and then it has to be low enough for them to climb back in without difficulty it doesn't really matter.

oh yes - ikea extendable is v low to the ground

If you have the space, go straight for a normal single bed. The others are (IMO!) a waste of money really when they're going to need a single later anyway.

Both DSs went into mid-height loft beds at around 2.5. As they have built in rails all the way round, I've found them to be safer than ordinary beds (which they've both fallen out of in numerous hotels etc!), especially as my DSs wriggle a lot. Only DS2 has fallen out in the 4 years total we've had the beds and that was when he tried to climb over the side rather than use the ladder.

I don't like the Ikea one that you can fold down. It looks like a big tray when its fully flat and its not very strong. Mind you, its OK for the money.
I just bought a My First Bed from Silentnight. Its excellent! It has several options to choose from for headboard, base colour, feet etc but its a proper single bed with a good mattress. Whatever option you choose it costs £299. The service was great. I don't want to put DD in it yet (2.9) but I needed a single bed for my mum to sleep in at Xmas so thought I might as well buy the one DD can have when she's ready.

I just got a normal metal framed (quite girly with both a headboard and a footboard) single bed for DD when she moved from her cot at just over 2. The bed is against the wall (on the right hand side and at the head end), the remaining 'open' side was/is protected by a soft Tomy bedguard/rail.

The only issue with normal size single beds is the height of the floor, but a bedguard will prevent it being an issue if your DS rolls out of bed, and a little step (like the ones you can get for the bathroom) will help him hop in at bedtime and in the morning.

We went for just an ordinary pine bed for DS from an independent pine shop. Think it cost about £200 inc. mattress. It is very solid with a slatted base. There is plenty of room in his bedroom so no reason to do otherwise. Also he has a train set on a board which slides under the bed.
