Has anyone attempted to teach piano to own dc?

My 3yr old dd loves banging around on my piano, and when I recently showed her how to find the right notes for her favourite tune she absolutely loved it.

So I decided to try teaching her more 'formally', using counting and using different fingers (other than playing every note with the index finger).

It isn't going down well. She gets frustrated very quickly and shouts "I can't do it" whenever she gets it wrong. Today she said "I hate you," which really threw me as she's never said that to me before!

I'm sure I'm making all the classic mistakes - truthfully I don't have a clue what I'm doing. So any tips or advice from others who have tried this would be most welcome.

Yes, I began to teach dd and ds. however they were aged 6 and 7 respoectively. After 2 years dd moved on to a proper teacher as we were struggling to fit in a regular lesson.

I think 3 is too young for anything other than other than the occasional fun working out of twinkle twinklr little star.

With dd and ds I used the Pauline Hall books. Dd now uses Alfred piano course, I donlt like it as much but it works for her and her new teacher.

My mother was a piano teacher and tried to teach me. It didn't go well. I agree that at 3 your DD is too young for anything formal. I would just have fun with her atm.
DD3 is starting in Jan when she turns 6; that's the earliest our teacher takes them.

Thanks - I did wonder if she might be too young, but I distinctly remember my mum teaching me when I was a pre-schooler. I think I'll lay off it for a while.

My mum is a piano teacher now, but wasn't when we were little. She showed my brother the chords and then left him to it - he's now a brilliant musician and had lessons in several instruments later on. But he had lots of years just playing away to himself where he cultivated a love of music and a desire to learn. Leave her to it.

I have a 12wo DD and, whilst it is early days!!! ... I intend to teach her the piano on a very casual basis from about 3yo and more "formally" from about 4 1/2. I teach a little girl who is 6 and have taught a 5 yo in the past. There are 2 difficulties, of course... it's tricky to convince anyone younger than about 7 that something that is initially difficult is worth working on, and also you are becoming parent and teacher - something I dread and look forward to in equal measure! Good luck, but perhaps either a more casual approach or a 6month break is needed?
