More Proof: Babies are Weird

I've just come back from a few days at a friend's place. Her DS2 is 20 months. And nearly toilet trained!

She isn't interested in early training, but her DS decided, a few weeks back, that pooing in the toilet was a good idea, so started asking for the loo when he needed a poo. He's had some "accidents" (he's still in nappies), but mostly gets to the loo in time.

While we were there, she forgot to put a nappy back on after a poo, so he went off to the loo when he needed a wee!

She's not training him, she's actually a bit boggled by the whole thing (as you would be!). But he seems interested in being clean and dry, so he's doing it.

Have other people's kids done this?

Not to such an extent, but when DD was 24 months she had a sore bottom, so I left her nappy off for the day. She went on her potty for a wee (as left lying around as it had been for a while so she was used to seeing it abouit IYSWIM). Did it a few times. It was coming up to a long weekend so I was naughty - I took the next day off work to help encourage her. By day 3 she was dry!

Anyone else?

Blimey! DS is 21mo tomorrow and there is just no way he'd do this! Incredible how different they are, isn't it?! LOL at self-potty-training child with boggled mother though - that's classic!

I know! DS2 is 15 months, so not far from my friend's DS2 in age, and he's not talking at all (her DS2 talks all the time!) and certainly nowhere near toilet training!

Her DS2 is also generally freaky, though. He put two pens together in a cross shape, decided it was an airplane, and was flying it all over the place. I was sure that sort of imaginative play wasn't normal at 20 months!

She really is boggled by the toilet training, doesn't want to cope with the rushing to the loo all the time, etc, yet. Not sure what she'll do.

DD is 19 months and came up to me in the kitchen with wipes and changing mat in her hands and said 'poo' (she doesn't say anything yet) .. I was totally surprised at that

but the concept of a 20 month old training themselves is stunning

Yeah, I think he's been asking to be changed, when he has an accident.

He seems a very determined sort of child. Very different from his big brother, who is a lot more meek and mild.

Hmm, that makes it sound like her DS2 is tantrummy and horrible, when really, he's not.

Yes mine did exactly this at 18 months, so I went for it and after a week she wore pants during the day.

Tried to keep a nappy on her at night but she took them off and threw them out of the cot.

Have had people not believe me so I'm thrilled that another child is doing it.

NotQuiteCockney · 02/01/2006 21:38

It is a bit freaky. I don't think I would believe it if I hadn't seen it. (And knew the mum really well - she just isn't the type to push her kids to do things they're not ready for.)
