What is your after school routine for reception child?

I give dd a snack at pick up -she's starving and needs it or melts down - then if no other arrangements we go home and they end up watching telly for an hour and then it's jsut about time for food and then it's just about time for bath and bed etc - seems like no time to do anything anymore. I want to ditch telly or cut it right back but it's such a habit. And stopping the daily bath as, again, just feels like no time for any other activity. every other day would do.

Interested to hear how others manage the time after school and what your timetables are.

We usually go to the park after school as its on the way home and his friends go.

Then we just potter about at home. He is really interested in his letters and has been practising them on his chalkboard.
Tea at 5, bath at 6 and bed around 7.

He seems to have gone off the telly since starting school which I find strange as thought he would be more tired.

A daily bath is a necessity as both boys seem to get so dirty. Plus they have a bath together and DS1 tells me about his day.

I think telly, tea and bed after school is just fine for a reception child :)

DS1 gets home around 3.30, has a drink/snack then sometimes plays with toys, reads or watches TV/goes on laptop, I generally let him decide what he wants to do. Tea at 4.30 then plays for half an hour or so, TV goes on around 5.30 and bathtime starts at 6. Both DC tucked up in bed by 7.

We get homework out of the way first (unless DS is really tired). Then he watches some television, has his dinner, then some play, then a bath (every other day) and then we read some books in bed from 7 pm. Lights out at 7.30.

3.15 Escapes from class
3.15-3.30 Plays with friends in the playground/field before we go to pick up DD2
3.30-4.00 Walk home & talk about her day
4.00-4.45 Playing at home (outside/colouring/jigsaws), homework - letter practice & her reading book
4.45-5.15 Tea
5.15-6.00 Playing with her sister - build dens/marble run/farm etc or bath & change into PJ's
6.00-7.00 TV & Bedtime story on cbeebies
7.00 Teeth, stories & bed

On a Monday we go straight to swimming and they have tea there - skip to 6pm Grin

Ooh good thread! Can I also ask about what after school snacks you give your DCs? Mine are always so hungry but I don't want to fill them up too much or they won't eat their dinner!! Smile

SazZandASparkler · 10/11/2011 22:19

Kellamity - today mine had some breadsticks & hummus, sometimes a crumpet or slice of toast. Mostly DD1 snaffles all the leftovers from DD2's lunchbox Grin

We usually eat a snack on walk home. Arrive home around 315 then 1 goes and gets changed and the other does homework with me then vice versa, then it's tv or play for an hour or so, dinner at 5, bath around 6 (every 2nd day), and bed with a chapter from each girl's book at 7, lights off 745

musttidyupmusttidyup · 10/11/2011 22:22

Marking place waiting for good snack-ideas-that-fill-them-up-but-don't-ruin-their-appetite. DS wants to graze for an hour when he gets in then eats like a bird at tea time.

alittleteapot · 10/11/2011 22:25

dd had bread and hummous today, sometimes has bread and jam. lots of fruit. finding juggling the snack/dinner thing really hard. reading this I want to stop telly when just home - think half an hour after dinner before bath is good.

Teapot - we do everything, including bath before TV, so we are pretty much all done and dusted by 6pm and i can sit down and relax with a cuppa and MN

I find the TV 'carrot' aids good behaviour......

Jojay · 10/11/2011 22:30

I've brought tea forward to 4.30pm as they always seem so hungry after school. I can usually fob them off until then so they don't fill up on snacks. They have milk and pudding later at about 6.30pm.

Bath at 5.30pm, but only 3 times a week. 6 pm, Dh arrives at home so they play with him for a bit then up to bed at 7pm ish.

Reading books get done either side of tea. Sometimes they want to watch telly, sometimes they play with toys. Up to them really.

EssexGurl · 14/11/2011 12:13

If the weather was good we would play in the park next to school. Then walk home. At home we would look at his letters/words/books, have a go at hand writing practice before he watched TV before tea at 5pm. Then more TV before bath time (6.30) and then a book before bed (7.30). I found with homework, little and often every evening worked really well. We use the same routine now he is year 2.

kbird · 14/11/2011 12:26

I have to ration TV, or it would be on constantly! In fcat, I ration TV, iPhone and iPad malarkey - they can have tv at weekends, and possibly a pre-recorded thing 2/3 times in week (soley due to me irritation at tv advertising aimed at kids).

3.15 pick up both DS's from same school - must take snack or will be accused of poor parenting by starving boys.

home around 3.30/4pm, depending on form of transport. In clement weather we MAY go to park, or home to throw boys into garden with football/buckets of water/magnifying glass and jam jar. If weather bad then boys arse around fighting each other, or settle down quietly with lego/books - they alternate behaviour to keep me on my toes. Thoughtful children. DS1 has homework in here - about 30 mins? DS2 reads (yes, I am showing off! Fluent at age 4. All my own work of course. It's clearly genetic...)

Tea at 6pm. GF usually gets home around now, so she can join in with fighting/Lego

6.30 More fighting/Lego.

6.45 Shower-wrangling commences.

7.30 Into bedroom for as much reading time as they can get out of me.

8pm Sound of popping cork.

surpriseme · 14/11/2011 19:59
