If he seems ready then go for it. I started ds1 at 30mths and it was pretty easy. I would have started earlier but we were having work done on the house so I was staying at my mum's and didn't want all the hassle and pee/poo all over her carpets.

hercules · 02/01/2006 08:35

I would say a little early unless showing lots of signs.

cathyspam · 02/01/2006 08:38

my DS1 is 29 months and is just ready now - already 2 poos in potty but no wees yet. I took him out the other day and got him to choose some pants but we only wear them in the house at the mo and we got some stickers and made a chart - i think if he can tell you when he is going to do something he is ready. Good luck!

I started ds1+2 at just before 2.5 years so that they were dry for starting playschool.
They both got the hang of it very easily.

Ds3 is 2 and 3months now so I'll start him nearer the summer.

lazy me not read thread but what age to start ... when they are ready! My 2 older boys were out of nappies day and night at 2.5 ds3 still in nappies all the time and turned 3 at christmas! Planned to have a go over christmas but all struck down with sickness bug, so abandoned it!! Half term we will crack it!

Blandmum · 02/01/2006 09:13

my son was 3.5 and it took a week. stress free all round. in my experience the longer you wait, the less hassle.

Blandmum · 02/01/2006 09:14

but if he is ready, he is ready

roisin · 02/01/2006 10:00

I started potty training both boys at 24 months, and they were both dry during the day within a week. But it was just because they were both ready.

It is easier in the spring/summer though - when it's easier to get clothes clean and dry, and there are less layers/bulky clothes for them to manage.

daisiesinaline · 02/01/2006 10:01

Agree. IME the more ready they are the quicker and easier it is. DS1 was 2 yr 3 m and DD was 23 months. Every child is different but I would def wait until he is really ready - much easier then.

We've just started with 28mth old - we bought the potties about 2-3 mths ago and left them in bathroom. About 2 wks ago dh noticed ds weeing everytime he got into the bath so started offering him potty before bath. 3 days ago he told me in the morning ('wee poo mummy) and he's had pants on ever since (except sleep times) and we haven't had any accidents yet, touch wood. Good luck

fisiltoe · 03/01/2006 22:16

Agree when they are ready. DS1 was interested in the potty from well before he was 2, but wasn't ready. Then when he was about 2 1/2 he said to dp (who was changing his nappy) "hurry up and get my nappy back on daddy, I've got a wee wee coming." It took 3 days after that!

mum2sam · 04/01/2006 15:17

my mil asked me for the 4th time the other day if I started potty training ds hes only 14mths am I completely right right in thinking hes too young? Shes already boasting how she potty trained her 4 kids in 3 days. I made a joke that she obviously didnt do a good job with dh by the state of my bathing floor sometimes that shut the old bag up lol.

heavenis · 04/01/2006 15:49

If he's ready then give it ago. As for the laminate floor then make sure your have kitchen towel or an old towel that you can put over any accidents, that way he won't slip over. Then you can clean it properly

Pinotmum · 04/01/2006 15:54

God this time last year was trying to potty train ds. He was 26 mths and though keen to use the potty he really didn't have the bladder capacity or control and was going every 10 mins, poor thing. I was trying to get him ready for Pre-school but as it was he relapsed after starting . I eventually got round to trying again when he was 30 months and it was pretty quick though we had quite a few accidents but only 1 outside the house

UCM · 04/01/2006 18:27

My DS wants to use the potty but only if he can run around naked from the waist down. So we have had to stop him until summer. It's a shame but he just takes all his clothes off. He is 2.2

UCM · 04/01/2006 18:28

Forgot to add that it's freezing in our house, lots of draughts.

aragon · 04/01/2006 20:08

Mine was 3 just before Christmas and while we have had several wees on the loo we've not had any poos and if we're out and about forget it. "Do you need a wee James " "No Mummy" and 2 mins later wee everywhere. He's simply not bothered about being wet if he's occupied.

I am hopeless at it all. Am thinking about star charts etc but that's as far as I've got.

gladbag · 04/01/2006 20:16

Hi Beckyeliza, I have a 23 month old boy, and have been wondering as well, although I have to say that I think I'm going to wait for the first sunny weather in the spring (then he spend all his time in the garden and save the carpets a little...)

I'm not sure that he'd be ready now anyway. He will tell me when he's about to do a poo (in his nappy), but never mentions wee unless his nappy is off and he's in mid-flow on the floor (it's fascinates him and cause shouts of jubilation). We have a potty floating around upstairs and he's twice done a poo on it by himself, but no wees. He is very interested in the big loo (and wants his poos put in there to be flushed away by him).

I think 23 months is probably v young unless it's obvious that they have gained control over their bladder, and are v aware of what's going on. Ds is getting there, but I'm giving hima few months yet. HTH

tangarine · 04/01/2006 21:21

Both my DS's did it in a week the week they turned 3. I had tried earlier but it was pointless with both of them. Lots of their peers seemed to get toilet trained earlier and I used to think that DS 1 would never get there. I was more relaxed with DS2, but it still took the same amount of time.
