getting rid of dummy - pain free?!

My DD is 5 months and has had a dummy since she was about 3 months. I rue the day I gave it to her, sure I had a good reason at the time!
The problem is that she is now waking up 5 times a night having lost the damn thing, meaning frequent trips to her room to plug it back in! She is not wanting food until 7am so I think she would sleep through if it wasn't for the dummy falling out.

I spoke to HV yesterday who advised going cold turkey. Just wondering if anyone has done this, how long is the screaming likely to last? any advice on making this as painless as possible? I feel like I'm about to give up smoking all over again, only this time I think I will need more will power!
Thanks in advance.

We had the same problem with DS1 at 8 months and went cold turkey. First night loads of screaming and comforting required. Second night tiny bit of fuss. Third night slept through and did from then on.

that is very reassuring!! we're away this weekend so think I will leave it until next week, doesn't seem fair to inflict screaming on my aunty!

No, wait until you're at home and can both manage with a disturbed night. We started on a Friday night then Sunday night he slept through.

DS2 still has one for sleeping age 2 so that's going to be a whole different process I think!
