I was down @ the sure start centre the other day when some of the other mums got talking about nicknames for there kids I was surprised how many mums got annoyed that there kids had nicknames at school! I always thought that as long as its nothing offensive & they're not being name called/bullied it was cool to have a nickname @ school its like a way of fitting in. I couldn't really say anything mine are only 2 but we've 'affectionately' been through the following: Mason: Fatty phoenix (because he was the biggest when he was born) mason Derulo/Derulo (after Jason Derulo - my other half started that one & we still call him it to this day!) the cube ( not used very often because he seemed to have a square head - aren't we nice!lol) curly sue (because he had really curly locks!) & sometimes I referred to him as my little princess ( he was often mistaken for a girl when we went out - I think it was because of the curls!)
Joshua: Sprocket ( because he was like a little scrap when he was born he was really tiny), little screech (because he had a really quiet screechy cry) & goo (because he used to 'goo' a lot) which later changed to goobert goo & then went to goobert goo lives in a shoe (another reference to his size)I've heard of other ones too like 'diddy milo' & 'paigey pilot'.

Isn't it fairly normal to give your children pet names? I thought it was.

My DH seems pretty much unable to use people's names. He calls our 3 month old DD "baldy" or "the little banker" due to having no hair apart from above her ears, but mostly she is the Babykins (even my in-laws have taken to this one), the Babybear or the Grizzler/Grizzlykins; I doubt DH will call her by her first name ever (unless she's in trouble) and she'll earn a dozen others as she grows!

MamaLaMoo · 08/11/2011 09:26

DD1 - Baby Moo, the moopola, Agamemnon, mini monster, little min, minster lovell (the name of a nearby village, can no longer remember why we call her this Confused)

DD2 - Wriggle, grunty moo (describes her breathing when little), Elspethus the Roman baby. She's only 12 weeks old so ample time for some more additions Grin.

Dd (7) is still referred to as The Moosey in our house. She was Moosey Moo Cow as a baby as she could down a bottle for England like her mother ....

Awww I love curly Sue! My DS is Harry Dean - so I usually call him Beano, my mother hates it which makes me do it more she says he won't know his name - he is 2 and knows his whole name and answers to Beano! I also call him Tiger although a man in the park the other day sneered and said to his wife "the things people name their kids nowadays, poor kid" which made me giggle considering how traditional his name actually is!

ChunkyMonkeyMother · 08/11/2011 09:36

I think its cute - my Dad still calls me Tilly (as in Tilly mint - does anybody even know who that is?) I remember being shocked when my friends Mum called her that ha ha

LorainneK · 08/11/2011 09:50

My DH calls our nearly 7 month old dd ribit. Not sure how it started but something to do with him making frog noises at her during a game, the strange man. Now it is shortened to The Rib. My mother hates this and insists on calling her The Gem instead. She is actually called Gemma so hopefully she will learn her real name at some point!

oopslateagain · 08/11/2011 09:56

Apparently my dad called me Fred so much when I was little that I started to think it was my real name and my mum had to tell him to stop! Grin

DD has always been Bug-a-lug. No idea why!

SausageGoulsAndFruitSpooks · 08/11/2011 14:20

Ds1 is Doozer or Giggles or Squiggle.

Doozer because he looked this with all the hair when he was born. Giggles because he giggled loads and don't really know where Squiggle came from.

Ds2 is Bugsy because of his wide eyes or Tigga (short for Tigga Bounce)

BerryLellow · 08/11/2011 14:24

DS1 is punkin, DS2 is pickle. Both a bit boaky but I don't actually care :o

My sister, Olwen, was very flatulant and had a morbid sense of humour as a child earning the nickname from myself and my friends- 'Ollyweiner/Ozzyweiner, Queen of fartness'... Bear in mind, I was only six or so! She still goes by Oz at 22 years old but doesnt remember how it came about. Im not telling her!

My 10 mo DD is Momo (japanese for peach), Molliekins, Molski or babba. My PIL told me off for calling her my little chubba-bubba when she was born!

2kidsintow · 08/11/2011 21:26

My eldest is Becky Boo. She's 10 and still gets called it occasionally by me or a friend of mine. We've since met two other Becky Boos. :) She is also Beck or Bex.

My youngest is Jess the Mess....because it rhymes. There are many Jessicas in her year at school (6) and cheerfully tells everyone that she is Jess the Mess. We got her the book "Whose making that mess?" when she was younger and she used to love it. Sometimes I wish it was a more positive nickname though. :P

soupmaker · 08/11/2011 22:22

We call our DD 'the wee sweet' aka 'sweets'.

peedieworky · 08/11/2011 22:28

When I was preggers I had terrible nausea so DH named the bump the monster, which then became the monster munch as it became bigger and made me even more sickly. Now DS is here we still call him "munch" or "tootlemunch".

whojamaflip · 08/11/2011 22:31

Ds1 - Tiger / Alley Cat - initials are C A T
Dd1 - Smurf - seriously she looked like one when she was a baby Grin
Ds2 - Chunky Monkey - Answers better to "Chunks" than his name Blush
Dd2 - Little Miss or Stroppy Knickers or The Whizz

scotlass · 08/11/2011 22:32

DD was 'wee Callum' as a baby bump (christened by my dad) - obviously didn't stick as she was a girl.

DS was rocket boy for the first few weeks as he took us by suprise how quickly he appeared following a quick labour Grin

yawningmonster · 09/11/2011 04:36

DH almost always calls DS Squawker and DD squeaker due to the noises they made as infants. If at anytime DS is accidentally called Squeaker he will correct them with as much disgust as if they got his given name wrong.

CheerfulYank · 09/11/2011 04:49

DS is Sammer Bammer or Honeyboy or sweets. DS calls him Big Shooter and BIL calls him Sambone or just Bone sometimes.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 09/11/2011 08:53

DD has many NN, wingnuts was her first due to the ear:head ratio.
Bobbins - DH is a Manc and apparently it means a bit loopy
Cake - No idea.

Ooopsadaisy · 09/11/2011 08:59

Toerag and Ratbag.

Sometimes we use First Disappointment or Second Disappointment.

Before I get flamed, they are teens and quite happy with these names. I would never have used them unaffectionately or used them when they were little.

Their nickname for me is The Raving. It is a sign of a very honest relationship! (I think!)

Ooopsadaisy · 09/11/2011 09:01

Oh - and my Dad's nickname for me was Humphrey.

No idea why.

Perhaps he had wanted a boy ...... or a cat.

addictediam · 09/11/2011 09:10

I called dd my little monster once and mil got really upset! Said it was a horrible name and i would scar her for life...she now answers to monster! :o petty moi? :o

We also call her millie pie, no idea why!

Jemeraldx · 09/11/2011 23:16

I'm so glad I started this thread! what I love the most is how people can take they're kids most prominent feature (eyes, ears & in my case forehead!) & make it a nickname! (i.e the cube, wing nut, boggle eyes! lol) you just wouldn't go down the street point at someone & go oi! boggle eyes! lol but we can do it to our own kids (aren't we sweet!) I can't believe some people take these so seriously & offensively either! some people need to take the stick from up there arse & relax a bit! chunkymonkeymother (love the user name btw) ditto! my mother says the same thing & I have the exact same reaction :o
