Moving to a bed - what do they wear?!?

I probably am being really silly, but would appreciate any advice! DD is 23 months and ready for us to convert her cotbed from a cot to the bed as she can get her leg to the top of it and we'd like to move her before she manages to climb out.

Currently she sleeps in a long-sleeved body suit and 2.5 grobag at night and during the day she just sleeps in whatever she is wearing and we chuck a blanket over her. During the day, she never keeps the blanket over her, although this doesn't affect her sleep.

When we move her to the bed, we are planning on giving her a duvet - I am thinking the lighter 4 tog one and then put her in pyjamas/clothes warm enough that if she kicks it off it doesn't matter too much. I am quite happy to put her in pyjamas with a body suit underneath, but am worried that her feet will get cold! I know she wouldn't keep socks on either.

Basically, I would like to know what do your children wear in bed/did they wear in bed at that age and does it really matter? Should I get the 4 tog or 7 tog duvet and what do I do about her feet? Her room will be between 16 - 18 degrees I should think most nights during the winter...

Thanks in advance, and apologies if I am asking silly questions!

At that age DS refused to tolerate anything on his feet, whether footed pyjamas, socks, or any sort of blanket. So he tended to wear pyjamas with a separate top and bottom, and no blanket. He was fine. Even in the cold winter.

BertieBotts · 05/11/2011 19:50

Although he does seem to have an especially high tolerance for cold.

I'd just go for the duvet, you can always check her when you go to bed and put it back on if she's kicked it off.

I got fleece baby gro things from primark, and if a really cold night put extra pjs on underneath. Mine are toasty warm with this combo. The duvet is a token gesture.

We moved DS from a Grobag to a Sugglesac before using a duvet.

My 21 month old is in a bed now, and isn't so good at controlling the duvet! To stop him getting chilly he wears a fleece sleepsuit with feet, with a vest under it if chilly (our house is cold and it often drops to 14 degrees or less overnight), and if really cold then a cotton sleepsuit under it, with a 7 tog duvet. I do think the footed sleepsuits are good until they adjust to a lack of sleeping bag.

MrsHerculePoirot · 05/11/2011 20:04

Thank you so much for all the quick responses! I agree the duvet will probably be a token gesture. Those snugglesacs look quite good, I had looked at the zip up duvet sets the Gro company do.

I think I might just go for it with pyjamas and vest/bodysuit underneath and duvet and see where we go from there!

Can I also just ask - did you give them pillows too or not bother? I am thinking not bother for now...

DS has a pillow but I tend to feed him to sleep so he's not on it at all. If he ever goes to sleep by himself he loves his pillow, though.

BeeBopBunny · 06/11/2011 10:11

My DD moved into a proper bed at about 19mo because she discovered she could climb out of the cot. We kept using sleepsuits and sleeping bags because she wriggles around so much in the night - we knew she would never manage to stay under a duvet. She's 22 mo now and we still use the same stuff. She sleeps brilliantly. We thought if it aint broke, why fix it?

noblegiraffe · 06/11/2011 17:34

My DS (26 months) went into a bed about a month ago. He would never keep a blanket on him in the cot but has been fine with a duvet. We also gave him a pillow straight away and after a couple of nights of him sleeping alongside the pillow across the bed he seems to have it all figured out now.

He's still in sleepsuits, mainly because I'd only recently bought the next size up and wasn't going to fork out for pyjamas!

We got him this duvet from Argos, it's a 4.5 tog and a 9 tog that velcro together to make a 13.5 tog. He's currently sleeping under the 4.5 tog one, but when it gets a bit colder we'll probably switch for the 9 tog.

DitaVonCheese · 06/11/2011 19:04

DD went into a bed at around 2.5. She's always been in pjs plus a vest (as in an adult style one, no poppers at the crotch) in winter. I think last winter we also put her in a fleecy sleepsuit over the top if it was really cold but don't have one her size this winter (mental note to check ebay for one!).

Covers-wise she has the cot duvet (it's a cot bed) from Ikea with an Ikea cot pillow - cheapo ones both times Blush She does kick the duvet off quite a lot though atm we've put a lovely big quilt her granny made for her folded in half over the top and that doesn't seem to move about as much. She goes through periods of wanting to in her sleeping bag still (she comes and gets into bed with us in the morning but can walk in it) and/or wanting to wear socks in bed.

dearheart · 07/11/2011 21:25

My dd wouldn't have anything on her so i put her in a fantastic padded sleepsuit from Mothercare (can't find it on their website but they had a selection). It was as warm as a duvet, but she could walk around in it. Brilliant.

Frawli · 07/11/2011 21:33

We are still using a cotbed but are now using a duvet. I dress her in fleece sleepsuit with feet, socks don't stay on her but she stays pretty warm in this. Luckily she is quite petite, so those next fleece babygrows that she is actually a year too old for fit her really nicely now!

There has been a noticeable improvement in how much the duvet stays on in the time she has been using a duvet. Also, like others have said, a duvet seems to stay on better than a blanket. One thing you could try is using a full size duvet horizontally across the cotbed as you will be able to majorly tuck it in and that might help too. Also, will then not need cot bed sized duvet cover.

Personally I'd give her a pillow although expect her not to know what to do with it for a while.

sparkleshine · 07/11/2011 22:31

My DS is still in his cotbed (23months) but will be changing it to a bed soon. He's actually not even tried to get out yet.
He's been in pajamas since 12 months, with or without a vest depending on the time of year. He loves his duvet and snuggles himself in it. He's also under a blanket at the moment, but will pull it off if he's warm.
No pillow just yet but will do when in the proper bed. He likes lying on mine when he gets into bed with me in a morning though.

MrsHerculePoirot · 08/11/2011 06:41

Thanks for all replies - we changed to bed 2 nights ago and all fine! She wore short sleeved bodysuit under pyjamas which was good as she ended up sleeping on top of duvet sideways! Once she gets sleeping under duvet will leave off bodysuit.

First night she woke up at 1030 and took an hour to resettle, last night slept all night and still asleep now!

Is there any reason why grobags shouldn't be used in beds?
I'm going to move dd into a bed soon and was planning on continuing with grobags but wondered if there was a safety reason for not using them outside cot?
Thanks
sorry for digressing op

MrsHerculePoirot · 08/11/2011 20:10

That's not digressing, and anyway my question has been answered so digress away!

For us DD needed to move to next size up, so we didn't bother and just went to pyjamas. I think it's fine and know people that have, you can also get gro bag things but with legs! I think I thought it would be better so she could get in and out of bed herself safely too.

My DD1 stayed in her grobag from when I took the sides off her cot (22 months) until about 2.6. She could easily hop in and out of bed and sack race around her room etc. I think the main safety concern is that their movement is quite restricted so e.g. stairs might be a danger as they could fall down (we had a stair gate at the top), the other issue of course is they can't go to the loo - she came out of night nappies at 2.6 so couldn't stay in grobag any longer as needed to be able to use the potty at night if necessary.

Had to take sides off DD2's cot at 18m as she was a climber. She had a duvet straight away, but had trouble keeping it on. I found that tucking a big blanket (or a sheet in warmer weather) tightly over the duvet held it in place well enough for her.

Frawli · 09/11/2011 20:55

My DS was in a cot and then we put him in a bed. Since a bed is higher than a cot bed I was worried he'd get up all sleepy in the night and the grobag would make him more likely to fall off it. He fell off it anyway, as it happens, even though we had a bed guard on there!

DD is in a cotbed and once we convert it to a bed it would obviously be a low bed and I wouldn't worry about her so much in a grobag for those reasons but since I put DS under a duvet I just automatically have done it for her too! She's slept fine.

pigleychez · 10/11/2011 08:31

DD1 moved into a bed at 18mths. She wore normal pj's with a vest if needed.

She moved from a cot to a junior bed. We used a single duvet and tucked the end and one side under the mattress so that it made a kind of envelope/ sleeping bag to sleep in and meant to was harder off and easier to find if she wanted the covers back on.

DD2 is just coming up for 18mths and will be moving to a bed soon (between xmas and new year as DH is off work and doesnt matter if shes unsettled at night )
Should be fun as DD1 (3yrs) will be moving to a BIG bed (single) so that DD2 can have the junior bed! Lets hope they BOTH sleep well!

Re pillows- at first DD1 would just chuck the pillow on the floor before going to sleep but eventually got the idea and slept fine. A small cushion has found its way into DD2's cot (from DD1) and she seems to like it and will put her head on it to got sleep... never stays like that though as she's such a wriggler!
