red bush and camomile tea for 10mo?

My 10mo does not drink water. She will have the odd sip when offered but most of the time spits it out or just turns her head.

This has started to stress me out now as she has cut down on her milk so I expected her to be more thirsty.

I let her have a sip of my cooled red bush tea and she loved it. I wondered if this or camomile would be ok to give her in a sippy cup?

Didn't really want to start on the juice if I could help it!!

Wwyd?

I wouldn't myself. Water is best drink for them for as long as you can hold out. She may have liked it as it was Your drink, have you tried offering her your water glass (beware of floaters afterwards!)

Ds drank very little water at this age as you describe. Now 16 months and has an inch or so from his open cup and sometimes from a water bottle or my glass. Milk seems like a drink to us but for babies its food for a long time, so I don't think amount of milk dropped needs to be replaced by water. I would trust her to know when she is thirsty. Keep offering water, perhaps in different types of cups.

Food is mostly water, don't forget. I wouldn't give tea at this point - stick with water (try a straw?) and milk. Don't go the juice route!

Thanks ladies. I will persevere with the water. I have bought a cup with a straw to see how she gets on with that. She already has a.doidy and a.sippy cup.

There is NOTHING wrong with Rooibos tea - it is caffeine free and is actually recommended for babies with colic ...

JetJungle · 05/11/2011 14:13

I was brought up drinking Red Bush in South Africa (known as Rooibos over there).

I gave it to my son from about 6 months old. It is caffeine-free and rich in anti-oxidants. Traditionally it is used for the treatment of allergies and colic (because it is an anti-spasmodic).

BTW It also helps with nappy rash and is brilliant for relieving skin irritations (I used to stick a teabag into his bathwater every now and again).

Go for it!

Interesting JetJungle. I didn't know that.

Red bush and camomile are fine. Normal is best avoided due to caffeine and tannins.

BertieBotts · 05/11/2011 14:28

Herbal teas are used in many countries. As long as you aren't adding sugar to them I think that's fine.

mumatron · 05/11/2011 14:37

My dd is 10mo and will only drink water through a straw.

She love redbush in a beaker or doidy cup though.

Timeoutofmind · 05/11/2011 15:02

Cheers all. At least I know that red bush and camomile won't harm her. But I'll try to get her drinking water through a straw as well.

Also South African and grew up on Rooibos which is absolutely fine and very healthy! Not sweet at all so it is certainly not juice. My 14 mo ds drinks it loads and has done for some time (although he also is happy with water).

Octaviapink · 05/11/2011 20:44

The tea won't be harmful, you just don't want to instill a habit of drinking nothing but! DD has some rooibos teabags that she uses when she's making dolly tea in her teaset (it gives a nice colour and doesn't matter when if she drinks it).

Nice tip about the bathwater - might try that one.

BartletForAmerica · 06/11/2011 19:49

My 15mo DS LOVES Redbush tea as well - he's always after the cold half of my cup!
