Everybody,

I am a new mother and my daughter is 4 months old. It?s my first child and I need some advice in terms of packaged baby food. Where can I decide on the best things to buy my baby? My question is, where can I gather reliable information about baby food.

What should I look for when buying food for my baby? Do you just go in the store or should I inform myself at home about the products before buying?

Thank you very much for your help. I am looking forward to rearing from you.

Carin

I look on the back of the jar at the ingredients list, and try to avoid things with additives. Eg. Ellas kitchen pouches all have proper ingredients such as potato, chicken, carrot etc. Whereas some other foods have additives, thickners etc.

Thank you very much for your message. So you would go in the store and make your decision there, right? Would you also go for special offers or would you remain faithful to your brand? I think offers like 2 for 1 are very attracting. Especially for a single mother.

Don't buy processed baby food. Get a good nutrition guide and work from that. You've got two months to build up to it! Your health visitor will also be able to help you. All bought babyfood is about twelve times as expensive as making it yourself, especially if you use jars (they should be thrown away after a meal, regardless of how much is left in them) so making it yourself is the thriftiest option, regardless of special offers.

To be honest I usually home cook my DDs food. When I cook something for us like spaghetti bol, chilli, curry, stew, pasta & sauce etc I will freeze a few small portions for her (in the early days did this with veg purees). This way there is usually something in the freezer for her and it is much cheaper and nutritional.

However, I do use baby food sometimes as well as it can be easier when out and about. I tend to stock up on the better brands when on offer but have been known to purchase some of the cheaper ones sometimes as I figure that they're not gonna do any harm as she has them so rarely, and she eats very well (loves her fruit and veg etc).
