What do you dress your toddler girl in to go outside?

I know this is pretty trivial, but I am concerned that DD will be cold in leggings or tights, but this is most of what we have and her little dresses look really cute. Trousers also tend to fall down a bit as DD doesn't have a waist really. Nursery always send her back with a couple more layers than I send her in, so I guess I am underdressing her. What do you put on your DD's legs?

I think in this weather tights or leggings are fine. I did get some fab thick woolly leggings from H&M recently for DD1 and I think I might get some more- I was worried they might be itchy but she hasn't complained and they are v cute!

nailak · 27/10/2011 22:53

clothes Hmm

Northernlurker · 27/10/2011 23:11

I got some Boden woolly tights on ebay and they seem pretty warm. Have you got trousers with an elasticated waist? Boden and Gap both do these and they are good for staying up!

Lined trousers, Gortex boats, buff, hat jumper over t shirt.
an all in one water proof for splashing in puddles.

Put tights under legins for extra warmth, or shock horror try jeans with waist adjusters.

MrsRetchingBloodAndGuts · 27/10/2011 23:59

Tights and boots should be fine. Dd usually has fur lined boots for extra warmth

Octaviapink · 28/10/2011 06:55

Dungarees. 'Cute' really isn't a consideration when thinking about what to dress them in for cold weather - if she's cold at nursery then change your plan.

Unlurked · 28/10/2011 07:03

My 1yr old is in dungarees most of the time and my 3yr old wears jogging bottoms pretty much all the time cos that's what she's comfy in. Asda and m&s do nice warm ones although I think the asda ones are to be found amongst the boys clothes.

Have you got her a snow suit? That'd keep her warm with pretty much anything underneath.

Well today she came back with less on than I sent, so now they have really confused me. Great recommendations. Thanks.

So long as she looks "cute" it doesn't matter, really. An important lesson about womanhood learned!

ChippingInToThePumpkinLantern · 28/10/2011 18:50

Tights or leggings with a vest & dress are fine.

Trousers/jeans with the elastic adjusters will stay up on pretty much any child. Next usually do some nice lined ones that also have the button turn ups to adjust the length.

Will nursery put 'outside' clothes on then if you provide them? If they would I'd get her a lovely cosy pair of lined waterproof trousers.

I wouldn't worry about nursery putting her in more of less clothes than you do - people will dress a child according to how hot/cold 'they' are not the child Grin

Even with waist adjusters I have problems with lots of trousers on DD - they just seem to work their way down or not go up over her nappy enough.

Seeker - I think that is a bit harsh! I am just enjoying choosing her clothes while I can as I don't think it will be long before she makes all the choices. She didn't wear a dress until she could walk as I didn't want to make crawling difficult so I am making up for a bit of lost time.

Tights and leggings are fine. Toddlers run around constantly - she won't be cold. My dd has the same problem with trousers because she's a skinny little thing so I tend to put her in pinafores and tights most of the time. She's often less wrapped up than her friends but she seems to have fewer colds than any of them so I like to think I'm bringing her up to be a hardy little soul!

smackapacca · 28/10/2011 22:53

CAn I recommend these belts for keeping jeans up?

My DD would run naked and still be too hot though, so I hear your plight about dressing correctly!

dreamfeeder · 28/10/2011 22:56

I just think a snowsuit for outdoors. I dress my DD in tights and dresses at the minute, but last winter, (admittedly she's only 13 months now so was a baby), but i had her in trousers with tights underneath! Maybe you could do warmer leggings under her dress? Or just go for the snowsuit for outdoors and surely dress and tights is fine for indoors!

Octaviapink · 29/10/2011 10:34

Depends on whether you have the heating on full time. We only have it on morning and evening so during the day the house gets pretty parky, especially when DD leaves the back door open all the time - dresses and tights would be freezing.

RefereezaWanka · 29/10/2011 10:37

At this time of year she wears denim pinafore dresses with a vest and long sleeved top underneath, cardi or hoodie over the top and wooly tights underneath. But in winter, we ditch the dresses. We do tights under trousers, jeans or trackie bottoms and vest, long sleeved tee and jumper or hoodie on top. Dresses arent really practical for the coldest months, imo.

Stateofplay · 29/10/2011 12:41

Jeans (with adjustable waist - most seem to have this now?), leggings, woolly tights.

Consider buying fake-fur-lined snow boots (only cheap, plastic - bit like lined wellies). Just bought some little leather boots from Start Rite for winter, instead of shoes. Her shoes or boots make a big contribution to how warm she is. It's especially cold where we live, mind.

Stateofplay · 29/10/2011 12:41

I love dungarees but never seem them for sale for children over 12 months.

Octaviapink · 29/10/2011 12:43

Check on ebay - you can pick up fantastic GAP, Next or Oshkosh dungarees for about £6. DD used to live in them last winter.

Stateofplay · 29/10/2011 12:44

Thanks I will!
