It's chucking it down, what shall we do??

It's 9.30am and so far we have read books, played with cars, walked up and down the hall, built some towers and knocked them down, played with the happyland train.

Now what? any ideas please, not feeling very imaginative today. I don't mind mess (so that's lucky then!) :)

I used to stick mine in a bath with coloured water and bubbles and lots of plastic cups, get out the little blow up pool and sit them
In it with loads of old newspaper to crumple/hide in/ shred up. Pudding painting ( sit in highchair with small bowls of that Angel Delight stuff) and let them stick their hands in and paint the tray/paper etc, get a load of cheap pasta tubes and some pipe cleaners and watch them spend ages trying to figure out how to thread the pasta onto pipe cleaners.

And as you're not afraid of mess, a big hit with my boys is cooking up a load of pasta tubes then putting them in a load of jelly and letting it set. They then spend ages squishing and squeezing and laughing at the jelly flying out of the pasta! Grin

Make some play dough.
finger painting
a bowl of rice and a cup.
plastic toys in jelly on a try.
tell a story with floor puppets.
ring a friend with a child to come round.

Thanks for suggestions.

DS had been worn out by his cousins the previous day so filled in some of the time by... umm... sleeping [hgrin]

Pipe cleaners went down well, and we made a HUUUUUGGGE mess creating some lovely artwork for grandma's birthday.

Will stock up on jelly for future rainy day emergencies.

The pipe cleaners also go down well if you add a colander into the mix. My 1yr old spends ages trying to poke the pipe cleaners through the holes. Grin

Also cornflour and water - it is a different sensation.

Ore if you are very brave - some sort of aerosol foam ...

On the upside I will be nicking all of these ideas! Grin

Now there's a good excuse to buy some squirty cream and use the rest of it to put on top of hot chocolate.

Yesterday I found out that filling a pair of trousers (not the ones they are wearing!) with ball pool balls and then squeezing them out of the leg holes is hilarious.

Thanks, will be trying the jelly and pipecleaners ideas.

This afternoon I discovered that colander + pipe cleaners + dried pasta + small plastic bowl = 30 mintes of fun. Brilliant.

Once the jelly and squirty cream are added into the mix we may never need to leave the house again. A good job really cos we'll be in a bit of a state by then Grin

This is a fab thread, I'm going to try lots of these ideas. Unfortunately my 18 month old still loves stuffing everything in her mouth and eats books and paper so can't do the newspaper idea!

I'm going to set up the sandpit in my garage over winter to entertain DD when it's too wet/cold/icy to go out. And I've bought her an all in one waterproof suit and a sledge and myself those grippy things you put on the soles of your shoes. So I'm hoping we'll get out even briefly most days.

Not looking forward to winter!!

All in one waterproof. Wellies. Similar outfit for yourself. Go out! Wet walks are one of our favourite things in the world. (The wetter the better.)

Ds did some washing up today - picnic plates etc. Water everywhere and I had to re-wash soome clean stuff he grabbed off the draining board but it went down very well and I got to make dinner with no crying.
