leaking nappies - help!

Can anyone give me some advice on how to stop nappies leaking at night time? I have 4 month old son, and practically every nappy at night leaks (none in the day). I am checking that his willy is pointing down, am pulling out the frilly bits, doing them up very tightly, but still they leak. Have tried 4 different brands. Any advice welcome, as we are up 3 times in the night and I am sure he would be sleeping through much more if he wasn't getting wet. Thanks.

I would just suggest different brands, but you have tried that. Does he need a smaller size? Sorry if that is stating the obvious! We had a lot of poo coming out of nappies a while ago, even though, according to the packet, the nappies should fit ok. Someone suggested trying a different size and hey presto, no more leaky poo!

i would change the brands as atm im using huggies which they are totally crap as seems to be leaky most of the time (ive got a DD) and i usually use Pampers as ive never had any problems with them (the reason why i got huggies as i bought them as emergency as didnt realised i ran out of nappies - oops!)

I have had this too. Agree about the size thing being very important. Are they leaking out of the sides or are they filling up so much that the inside gel stuff is leaking? If the first, nappies are prob bad fit/too big and change brand/size. If insides leaking, either change in middle of night if possible (not ideal I know but better than wet legs and bedding) or look for a more absorbant nappy.

thanks - I have tried Pampers, Huggies, Tesco and Boots. All ok in the day, but at night they all leak from the top and he gets wet on his back. He weighs 13lbs and is in size 3, 9-20lbs, so that is the right size I think. Does anyone know a more absorbent nappy than those above?

I suggested this to a friend who had similar problems and didn't want to use cloth. If you have a Waitrose near by, look for Mother-ease wraps in the cloth nappy section and put one over the top of the nappy at night, they are excellent for leaks - if it's still leaking I'd boost with either Boots disposable boosters (if they still do them) or cloth boosters (eg. a thick face flannel) at night.

The wraps can be washed at 40 degrees with your other washing and only need doing every other day, so you'd only need two.

If you don't have a Waitrose, try here Kittykins

or try a OneLife. It's similar to Motherease one size, but an improved version - more stretchy and slightly more absorbent. You can buy online www.onelifeworld.com or from a Lollipop Advisor www.teamlollipop.co.uk or from retailers. They do wraps too!

Cloth is the answer!!
why don't you have a chat with an advisor.

try here lollipop i found a lady local to me who came round and showed me what is out there! She was very helpful and I even got to try out a few before i bought any.

thoise motherease wraps - do i get the nappy or the wraps? The wraps don't look absorbant. Plus do u really put stuff ocvered in poo in with the rest of your washing? I don't have a clue about cloth nappies. I have a similar problem now though - every time one of my two does a poo, it leaks either over the top of the back, or out the legs, even when the nappy is quite empty. I've tried changing brands and sizes. I am so fed up with chuckign vests away.

misdee · 05/01/2006 17:36

the wraps arent absorbant.
dop you really throw away vests with poo on? just shake off any poo down the loo, and put the vest in the machine, if its slightly stained after washing, then hang it in a sunny place.

generally hardly any poo goes in my machine, i use fleece liners so shake off the poo down the loo, and when the nappy bucket is full put a load of nappies on.

hardly ever have leaks.

Kelly

try looking at www.babykind.co.uk they will explain everything about cloth nappies.

Basically the wrap is the waterproof bit that goes over the absorbant nappy. I think what the others are suggesting is that you use a disposable then put wrap over it to make it more waterproof if you don't want to go down the cloth route.

A good idea would be to get an absorbant nappy like a tots bot and a wrap (motherease air-flow the best IMO) and give it a go, you can get cheaper second hand ones off ebay and could resell it again if you don't get on with it.

Re the washing no I don't wash nappies with the rest of the clothes, you either dry-pail - throw them in a pail as they are or wet-pail where you pre-soak them. I wait until theres enough in there then do a prewash with just water, then a 60 degree wash with a little powder.

Kelly1978 · 05/01/2006 17:54

I think I might try the wraps over a disposable. Would I wash them out by hand then? Will try ebay, thanks. I don't really want to go down the cloth route, I don't have the time, and half of their clothes wouldn't fit if I did that. And yeah, I do usually chuck them with poo on, unless it's only a tiny amount. It's rather runny and normally the whole back is stained. I've given up buying decent vest and just get cheap ones from sainsburys, but I still hate throwing vests that have hardly been worn.

vkone · 06/01/2006 14:03

The wraps can be washed by hand or with clothes in the machine (just don't tumble - they only take 30 mins to dry), you can just dunk them in bath water after LOs bath. Day to day you can wipe them down with a wet cloth or wipe and then wash them when they start to smell of wee.

As to pooey vests and clothes, why not give them a quick rinse in the bath and if you are really worried about bacteria, buy some napisan and put a scoop in your washing machine - it's anti bacterial and germicidal - I use it for washing towels occasionally to make sure they're really clean.

The nice thing about cloth is the elastic at the back (on both the nappy and the wrap), it provides a great barrier for explosions!
