Patches of spots on 15 month old Dd?

I've just noticed she has patches of raised, red spots on her knees and bottom...is this something I should be worried about or just one of those things...anyone know?

Sorry for the stupid question but has she got nappy rash? The spots on her knees sound like a reaction to something - has she been crawling on grass, carpet (esp. if you have pets) or anything else you could think of that could set off a reaction?

If it doesn't seem to be bothering her then I'd leave the spots unless it's nappy rash. If she's itchy or irritable then a dose of infant Piriton or a topical anti-histamine should help.

And of course do do the meningitis glass test, just in case :)

Thanks for the reply! She is walking so rarely crawls any more, she did do a little climbing up stairs at MIL's house at the weekend but had her trousers on, no change in washing powder etc.

They are raised red spots, most of them look to have fluid in. They are still thee and some seem bigger, think I may take her to the docs. SHe has had a cough for over a month now too so will ask them to look at that again too.

DD has had a load of raised red spots on one knee for a couple of weeks and I took her to the pharmacist today who suggested spider bites. It's a very spidery autumn, apparently. We've got Benadryl cream so I'll see how they look tomorrow morning.

Fluid filled red spots sound like chicken pox. Has she had it before?

NinkyNonker · 26/10/2011 07:35

Well I took her to the docs fearing the pox (haha) and apparently it is molluscum contagiosum and there is nothing we can do about it!

:) Can't pronounce that but it sounds like she's ok.

muslimah28 · 27/10/2011 19:52

interesting! my first thought was molluscum contagiosum when i saw the title of your thread but then the description in your OP sounded different. ds has (hopefully had!!) molluscum for months and months.

anyway, there are homeopathic remedies for molluscum should you wish to treat it but its pretty harmless so drs just say to leave it.

i say 'had' above as we were treating ds' molluscum with zymaderm just before he got the pox, but then he got lots of chicken pox spots directly over his molluscum spots, and it seems as though that's triggered the immune system to fight the molluscum virus at the same time. so hopefully they're gone now, but we still need to keep an eye on it as he could still have the virus in his body and new spots emerge.

Are the spots pearly with the dimple in the top? I read up on it on wikipedia and it seemed to think that that was classic but DD's don't have that - they look more like bites but they don't itch and the Benadryl hasn't done anything.

octavia molluscum spots have different phases of development, usually at first they appear as very small pimples like the size of a pin prick, then they grow in size then they get filled with whitish pus and look like whiteheads. but they can also look warts and not visibly look like whitheads (though there is still pus inside you just cant see it). i would get a doctor to check it out, molluscum is fairly common in general practice but i don't think many pharmacists now about it (dh is a pharmacst and hed never heard of it before ds got it).

Both my DS has had Molluscum & chicken pox also cleared up DS2 particularly nasty bout (& his ezcema which was an added bonus!). DS1 was contained to his torso & upper arms and they were quite small like little warts & only a few with the white head (it's a hard white nodule not pus) whereas DS2 spread to his face, hair, legs etc and were quite large, some got infected (although to be fair he had itchy skin anyway so he would often scratch off the heads) and most were big whiteheads. Both lasted about 18mths and with DS1 I tried stacks of conventional & alternative treatments but nothing worked. It doesn't bother them, it doesn't hurt them & there's nothing you can do so try not to worry. Oh, and I would cover her when swimming etc as most people treat you like a leper Grin

Thanks for that muslimah - think I'll take DD to the doc to get a proper diagnosis, although there's clearly nothing really to be done if that's what it is! I'd love to know where she picked it up, though, as she hasn't gone to nursery since last October.
