Sleep advice for a 14 month old!

Not sure if this should be here or behaviour & development, but hoping for some advice re non sleeping 14 month old.

He's never been a great sleeper but usually if he woke a quick cuddle or bottle if he was hungry and he soon went down again. He slept through 7-6/7 a few nights a week. Then he started nursery 2 days per week and had a V&D bug about 1 month ago and it's all gone Pete Tong since then!

He wakes at 11, cuddle then back down at 12 then wakes at 3 and that's him until 6. We've tried bringing him in with us - he just crawls all over the bed wanting to play. We've tried 10 nights of controlled crying and he got steadily worse. First few nights 5 minutes and he was over again by night 10 he was screaming for 3 hours solid. We have an older DS too so his sleep was then disturbed. He sleeps in his own room and goes down at about 7.30 by himself no problem!

Any advice or suggestions would be gratefully appreciated!

Does he nap in the day?

2011RWC · 23/10/2011 20:44

About 45 minutes max and he's nearly falling over tired at about 12noon so I'm not sure I could cut this down any or maybe I should?

Will he only sleep for 45 minutes? I'd say he needs a lot more sleep in the day.

Yep - he's never taken that 2 hour lunch time nap. DS1 (2.10) did and still does. Nursery say he sleeps for 50-60 minutes but won't even lie down until all the others have gone to sleep!!!

Maybe try two 45-60 minute naps in the day then and see if that helps - he could be overtired and that's what's disturbing his night time sleep.

OK - I'll give it a go! This is all a bit of a shock to the system DS1 is a great sleeper! DS2 also appears to be thd lightest sleeper ever - opening a kitchen cupboard, the room below his bedroom can wake him!!!!

Hi - what do you do when he wakes? Give him water or is he waking for milk?

2011RWC · 23/10/2011 22:51

It depends on how much he's taken of his bedtime milk - if not a lot I usually just end up giving him a bottle at some stage during these wake up sessions! I don't thunk he's waking for milk - he's a good eater and drinks a goods lot of juice throughout the day. I think he really just wants the company!!??!!

I do this also for my 11 mth old especially if he has eaten little in the day, he screams the roof off if i offer water and has not wanted solids on and off when teething badly. I thought it may subside but seems like u are a few months on and no joy... I watch with interest thanks
