I purchased Gina Fords not so great book (just felt I was doing it all wrong) & also the baby whisperer (much kinder!). Both dont keep in mind unforseen circumstances during the day, Like a baby that you cant get to wake up or keep up if shouldnt be sleeping or illnes which puts the whole plan sideways!! Gina Ford just seems sooooo regimented.
I know it is very personal ; Demand feeing v structured feeding. Midwives go with on demand feeding, nurses employed at home go for structure. I personally prefer Tracey Hoggs style , more holistic for family. Is it to young to start at 6weeks???

Hi

I have got the baby whisperer and would like to give it a go with DS (7 weeks) - we could support each other?

DO you have sky? On channel 196 there is a program about it every weekday at 12pm I think.

That would be great , beccarollo.
Not easy at this stage , as not much can keep them amused for very long to stretch them between feeds if awake.

Harvey is starting to be awake longer and longer now but not normally more than an hour.

Do you have a boy or girl? Name?

Hahaha! Sorry to laugh, but am remembering myself with that book - I was constantly watching the clock, could never, ever work out how the 45 minute cycles were actually supposed to work (could never get a timetable for a day to work out) and didn't think I should wake a baby after 45minutes anyway. It was the panic as each 45 minute cycle approached that got to me, before I ditched it completely. I just never really understood it, I suppose and it made me even more paranoid than Ms Ford. In the end (much much later than six weeks) ds started sleeping very much in a 'Gina' pattern, so I do think she is onto something.

I thought EASY was a great idea. It's not so much about religiously sticking to the 45 minute thing - more following a pattern of activity. I think the idea about having activity, even if it's just a nappy change, after feeding rather than just letting baby fall asleep on the breast/bottle is great - stops that feeding/sleep association which can be a pain to break later.

It gave me a bit of structure in those early days (when I had no clue!) without being too scary and Gina Ford prescriptive which put me right off.

Lois · 29/10/2003 15:30

I used EASY for the the first 3 months and found it very useful, but I did move onto Gina Ford afterwards as I needed some more structure to aim for in lenthening out the time between feeds.

Good luck!

Ok Ive missed something here - what is the 45 minute thing all about!?

Must admit I have only read snippets of the book since DS was born so probably havent retained any information in my sleep deprived state!

melsy · 29/10/2003 17:42

well basically it is a cycle all day of eat 45mins, activity 45mins, sleep 45 mins & you time 45mins?? I think thats how I have interpreted it is anyway!!!

Aloha - agree with the clock watching problem, now I worry if she sleeps longer and it seems a shame to wake her.

Good to get some shape to the day though.

I followed Hogg at 6 weeks, but even with her more holistic approach, I found that there were constant exceptions. The big joke between DH and I was that DD was constantly going thru a 'growth spurt' which would throw everything off. It was like she spent her entire first 5 months of life going through one long growth spurt. don't know much about Gina Ford, so can't really comment on her.

Beccarollo · 31/10/2003 10:29

Well Ive started this morning!! I have done the quiz thing and apparently I have an Angel/Textbook so we will see how it goes!

melsy · 31/10/2003 19:23

Beccarollo, would u like to swap !!! Mine is spirited & grumpy !! The spirited side she takes from mum!! The other is DH's character!!!! She is still my angel though!

I've loosley followed GF for 2 babies, about to have 3rd. Seen TH on tele, she seems nice, but all basic common sence, nothing earth shattering. With GF, the thing that seems to get everyone's back up is that it's so regimented, but I found it fantastic as a GUIDE, I mean, if it's so regimented, just loosen it up a bit maybe? I found her advice on BF absolutely fantastic, esp on increasing supply. I left a bf councellor in tears of rage & frustration, after seeing her in desperation because ds wanted to feed 13/14/15 times a day for up to half an hour. Her reply was 'that's what babies do, get used to it'. I was so pissed off. I then got & referred to GF book & her advice was absolutely spot on.

BTW, I have no recollection of the 45 minute thing?

Might look at TH book though -didn't have such things when I was 1st timer.

I've done both GF and E.A.S.Y with my ds and found both worked. Personally, I'd recommend EASY in the first 2 months, then try moving onto GF if you want more predictable structure to your day. Ds wouldn't stick to GF when he was young but he seemed to miraculously put himself into her routines from about 10 weeks on (he's now 15 weeks).

Baby Whisperer principles: Eat/Activity/Sleep/You. Eating and Activity is meant to take 1-2 hours, depending on baby's age, and then a Sleep of 1-2 hours. The main point is to get the awake time to follow feedtime, which is what all good routines advocate.
