Dirty looks

This morning I was really upset. We went to the Waitrose to collect our turkey.I was waiting in the coffee shop with my 20 months old daughter as my husband was doing the shopping. My daughter is usually extremely well behaved and friendly but does not like going to shops and prefers walking up and about to explore. My daugher was making noise to make friends with a nearby elderly gentleman who completely ignored her and went away to another corner of the shop.He was muttering in my earshot to his wife that they came for peace and quiet which could not be found there. My daughter was playing but at times was making noise as she was on the high chair.Tried a book and also offered her snacks but that did not help.Meanwhile we got dirty and filthy looks from other people around. The place was full with geriatric population today.Any advice would be appreciated greatly.

just ignore them. the rude people not your dd.

and pmsl at getting peace in waitrose on xmas eve, what planet was the guy on?

SnowmAngeliz · 24/12/2005 17:14

Oh miserable old codgers, you should have told them to stay at home for peace and quiet!

dingdongmeggymooonhigh · 24/12/2005 17:16

Unfortuntely they were probably of the "see them, don't hear them" generation when it comes to kids.
I think every parent will encounter this,ds is a screamer and arse grabber (when in the trolley) I normally mutter very loudly about that man/lady beoing rude not having any manners/being a miserable bugger etc.

Miserable sods! I just ignore people like this, how can you expect peace & quite in any shop on Xmas eve?

Children make noises in public places, they are just mean!

MelissasSecretSanta · 24/12/2005 17:18

The old people are mean, not the children. Easily misread!

WigWamBam · 24/12/2005 17:19

My stock response was to say "My daughter is vile/badly behaved/whingey because she's 20 months old. What's your excuse?"

Usually shut the mean minded old beggars up.

Nice WWB!
BTW I cannot wait to find out what you get from the MIL tomorrow. Will log in especially on boxing day |I think.

techiedoc · 24/12/2005 17:32

Thanks everyone for prompt replies.Didn't expect so many on Christmas eve!Anyway, the trouble is no one came up to say something rude on my face but muttered rudely in earshot but a fair distance away and another cow gave me a filthy look.I was not sure how to react to that.I was getting visibly upset which in turn did not help my daughter calm down.If somebody came up to say something I would perhaps have used the stock response of WWB or something along that line!!

DS (6) was in high spirits yesterday in Sainsbury's. Some miserable sod thought fit to pass a comment. I commented equally loudly that he doesn't like children. I hate it when old people expect respect from youngsters but show nothing of the sort themsewlves.

WigWamBam · 24/12/2005 18:20

Meggymoo, whatever I get from the MIL is bound to be a huge disappointment ... how can it ever top last year?

Techiedoc, I would consider that speaking rudely and loudly enough for you to hear would be grounds for saying something - if not directly to them then to your daughter about how some people are very rude, and we have to feel sorry for them that they are that way.
